**What can a horse’s response teach us about the way we communicate? 🦋**

We often think of communication as just the words we use.

But we communicate in many other ways — through our posture, movement, attention, timing, consistency and the space we give another individual.

Working with horses can make some of those less obvious parts of communication much easier to notice.

A horse responds to what is happening in the interaction — not necessarily to what we *intended* to communicate.

And that creates an opportunity for reflection.

**Was I clear?**
**Was I consistent?**
**Did I give enough time to respond?**
**What happened when I changed my approach?**

Importantly, the horse isn't a mind-reader or a mirror that tells us who we are. We don't need to assign a human meaning to every response.

Instead, we can become curious about what happened between us and experiment with doing something differently.

That experience can help us think about communication beyond the arena too:

**What am I communicating — and how might it actually be received?**

**Behaviour is communication. 🦋**

When a horse does something we don't want, it's easy to just focus on stopping the behaviour.

Won't stand still.
Won't go forward.
Pulls away.
Refuses.
Pins their ears.
Becomes tense or distracted.

But what changes when, instead of asking **“How do I stop this?”**, we ask:

**“What might my horse be communicating?”**

The behaviour gives us a reason to **pay attention, consider the context and investigate.**

And communication goes both ways.

Every cue we give, every release, our timing, body language and response to the horse are communicating something too. Whether we are aware of it or not, every moment we spend with a horse, we are teaching them something.

Within the **Flutterby Connection Framework™**, clear, ethical communication isn't simply about getting a horse to respond.

It's about creating **better understanding for both horse and human.**

We often hear that learning happens when we push people outside their comfort zones. But meaningful experiential learning doesn't require someone to feel overwhelmed, exposed or unsafe.

In equine-assisted learning, we aim to create enough emotional comfort for people to be curious, experiment and notice what happens. The same applies to the horses. They need choice, appropriate boundaries and the ability to communicate when something isn't comfortable for them.

That matters because the horse isn't simply a tool in somebody else's learning experience. The interaction needs to work for both participants.

When both horse and human have space to communicate and respond, something interesting becomes possible:

comfort supports communication,
communication can build confidence,
and confidence creates opportunities for connection.

Answer to the poll: I look at all four. The bit, the horse's mouth, what the rider wants or needs as well as the horse's reactions to anything we try.

A bit fitting doesn't start with choosing a bit. Before I recommend changing anything, I want to understand the horse, the equipment and the communication between horse and rider.

Because a bit can look perfectly reasonable on paper and still not be the right solution for that particular partnership. I consider the horse's anatomy and responses, how the whole bridle setup fits and functions, and what happens when horse and rider communicate through it.

Sometimes that leads to a different bit.

Sometimes it leads to changes elsewhere in the setup.

Sometimes it's a schooling issue.

And sometimes the best recommendation is to change very little.

The aim isn't simply to find a bit that fits.

It's to find an equipment setup that supports comfort, clearer communication and the horse–human partnership.

For a horse, that might mean equipment that fits comfortably, freedom from unnecessary pressure, or feeling safe enough to explore something new.

For a person, it might mean having the space to learn, experiment, make mistakes and find their own way forward.

And comfort doesn't exist in isolation.

It affects how clearly we communicate, whether confidence can develop, and ultimately the connection we are able to build.

That's why Comfort is one of the four interconnected pillars of the Flutterby Connection Framework™.
