I often see people choosing a dog based on appearance, popularity, or purchase price, but very few consider the long-term cost of ownership.
A dog's purchase price is usually the cheapest part of owning it.
Before bringing a dog home, consider:
• Food
• Veterinary care
• Vaccinations
• Insurance
• Grooming
• Training
• Boarding and pet sitting
• Toys and enrichment
• Breed-specific exercise and social needs
Some breeds require professional grooming every few weeks. Others need extensive training, mental stimulation, or specialised care. The cost isn't just financial—it's also time, commitment, and responsibility.
The question shouldn't only be "Can I afford to buy this dog?"
It should be "Can I afford to care for this dog properly for the next 10 to 15 years?"
A dog isn't just a pet. It's a long-term commitment.
