🐾💬 Comfortable Communication: Speak Your Dog’s Language
Dogs don’t use words—but they’re constantly communicating. Unfortunately, most of us grow up only learning human ways to show affection—like hugs, direct eye contact, or head pats—and we don’t realise how confusing or uncomfortable that can feel to a dog.
🐶 I learned this the hard way. As a child, I adored my dog and just wanted to show him love. One day, I sat down beside him and gave him a big hug—and he bit me on the shoulder. I was heartbroken and confused.
Years later, before I became a dog trainer and behaviour consultant, I gently patted another dog on the head, thinking I was being kind. Out of the blue, he grabbed my hand and tore the skin between my fingers. If I had understood dog body language, I would’ve known how uncomfortable both dogs were feeling—and how I could’ve avoided those situations.
🎯 Here’s how you can make your dog feel more comfortable and safe:
✅ Approach Sideways – A head-on approach can feel threatening. Curving slightly or turning your body sideways is friendlier.
✅ Lower Yourself Calmly – Instead of bending over a dog, crouch beside them in a relaxed posture.
✅ Avoid Reaching Over the Head – Offer your hand from below and let them come to you.
✅ Soft Eyes, Not Staring – Big eyes and direct eye contact can be intimidating. Use soft eyes and blink slowly.
✅ Teach Eye Contact Gently – Eye contact is unnatural for dogs, but through positive reinforcement, they can learn that it’s a good thing—especially helpful in households with children.
✅ Be Cautious with Hugs – Dogs don’t naturally enjoy arms placed over or around them. Movements over the top of a dog’s body can feel intimidating. With time, trust, and positive experiences, some dogs may learn to enjoy gentle closeness—but it should never be forced.
✅ Use Calming Signals – Dogs often yawn, lick their lips, or look away to communicate peace. You can use these too! (Ref: Calming Signals – Turid Rugaas)
💡 If we want dogs to understand our world, we need to make the effort to understand theirs first.
