The care and education of children on the autism spectrum have seen significant developments over the years. One of the most notable shifts has been the transition from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to Positive Behaviour Support (PBS). This blog post explores these two approaches, their differences, and the benefits of adopting a PBS approach.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) has its roots in experimental psychology and focuses on understanding and changing behaviour through measurement and analysis. Historically, ABA has been applied in ways that were sometimes inappropriate and ineffective. However, over the years, ABA has evolved to ensure that unethical practices are no longer used, and it now operates under a strong ethical framework.

ABA aims to identify and modify behaviours by understanding the antecedents and consequences of those behaviours. While it has a large evidence base and a comprehensive range of techniques, ABA has faced criticism for sometimes viewing the 'problem' within the individual rather than considering the larger context.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) emerged in the 1980s as a response to concerns over ABA practices. PBS is a person-centred and trauma-informed model that seeks to understand the function of distressing behaviours rather than simply describing them. It recognizes that such behaviours may be a form of communication developed in response to previous environments or traumatic experiences.
PBS focuses on the individual's strengths and interests, aiming to improve their quality of life by reducing distressing behaviours through environmental changes and better support. It is a collaborative approach that involves the individual's support network, including family, friends, and caregivers.

Person-Centred Approach: PBS is inherently person-centred, focusing on the individual's needs, strengths, and interests. ABA, while it can be person-centred, has historically been more focused on behaviour modification.
Understanding Behaviour: PBS seeks to understand the underlying reasons for distressing behaviours, viewing them as a form of communication. ABA traditionally focuses on changing behaviours through reinforcement and consequences.
Ethical Considerations: Both ABA and PBS now operate under strong ethical guidelines, but PBS emerged specifically to address ethical concerns associated with earlier ABA practices.
Collaborative Effort: PBS involves the individual's entire support network, promoting a collaborative approach to care and support.

Adopting a PBS approach offers several benefits for children on the autism spectrum:
Improved Quality of Life: By focusing on the individual's strengths and interests, PBS helps improve their overall quality of life.
Reduced Distress: Understanding and addressing the root causes of distressing behaviours can lead to a significant reduction in such behaviours.
Enhanced Social Skills: PBS promotes the development of social skills through positive interactions and support.
Empowerment: PBS empowers individuals by involving them in the process and respecting their choices and autonomy.

The shift from ABA to PBS represents a significant development in the care and education of children on the autism spectrum. By adopting a person-centred, ethical, and collaborative approach, PBS offers a more holistic and effective way to support individuals with autism. As we continue to learn and evolve, it is essential to prioritize the dignity, respect, and well-being of those we support.

Welcome to our second Open Day. As this is something completely new to SA, PBS is quite different to ABA and with my experience with horses and UK training I have developed several programmes to fit your pocket and your child's needs. I learnt so much from the first Open Day from the feedback received from the beautiful parents and teachers. My approach is completely person centred, but with the family fully involved.

In the PBS framework, supporting the family around the child is as important as supporting the child. I know Mom's and Dad's of neurodiverse kids have had to hide their tears and put on a smile for the world. Some people think that empathy is just a ..."Ag Shame" and move along. But true empathy is really understanding how another feels, embodying their emotions, their fears and how they feel safe. Let us work together and turn on the lights on in the Dark Alley of ASD!!!
