Puff Adder
Bitis arietans

Nice size female rescued from suburbia and released close by.

A South African adder species that has long hyperdermic type fangs and quite a large venom yield. Predominantly cytotoxic venom that causes continuous swelling and extreme pain. Without hospitalized treatment with anti venom, the destruction of flesh can be devastating and one could lose limbs as a result.

South African produced polyvalent anti-venom is succesful in treating medically significant bites. To shorten time from bite to treatment is important.
