Conducted a follow up inspection of this Somerset West pond.

Clear water, some algae build-up and testing showed no ammonia, nitrite or nitrates.

But fish were stressed, grouped at the bottom and some scratching against the walls.

Test kits don't always reveal the true story. Visual observations of fish behaviour and pond conditions will tell you if something is wrong.

Clear water ≠ Healthy water. Many pond owners and even maintenance guys think clear water is safe water.

In fact some of the most toxic and life threatening conditions your koi fish will experience are invisible and ever present in crystal clear water, such as ammonia build up, low KH levels and pH crashes.

Most pond problems are invisible. Have the water tested and make sure the filtration is good enough for your setup. If not, your fish will stress.
