A client testimony from a Proteavet regular, King Napoleon himself. 3 months on GCS Joint Care has him feeling young again at almost 12 years old. Jumping up on his favourite chair, sprinting down farm roads, and showing everyone who's boss!

P.S. The videos are sped up - we're not sure any Bulldog could move this fast! 😂

With the arrival of cold, rainy weather, we have seen more senior dogs struggling with joint pain. Cold weather can significantly worsen arthritis, making it difficult for our grey-muzzled furfriends to move around. Keep your seniors comfortable and pain free with GCS Joint Care supplements, available in a convenient chewy treat, a gel formulation for cats, or a scoop of powder over their food. Please ask our friendly receptionists to show you the options.

Zuri the little cat reunited with her rescuers after 202 days thanks to a kind stranger and a microchip!

A heartwarming reminder to make sure your pets are microchipped - even if they're indoors only or never leave your side, because accidents happen. We are so glad Zuri ended up at our clinic today ❤️🐈

Euthanasia means “good death” in Greek – as veterinarians and pet parents, we have the option to give them a peaceful end of life to ease their suffering. This is never an easy decision to make and may seem scary. By explaining the process and answering some frequently asked questions, we hope to destigmatize euthanasia for you.

This week, we are thinking of all the pet parents that have had to take the difficult step of letting their beloved furry friends go - know that we grieve with you.

MEET CINDY 🐕
At just 2 months old, Cindy’s owners heard a yelp and feared the worst when they found their puppy limping in the garden. X-rays revealed a fracture through the growth plate of Cindy’s radius (forearm) – a dangerous break that could stunt the growth of her little leg if not fixed properly. Drs Juanita and Michelle worked together to align Cindy’s leg and placed a cast-like bandage to allow the fracture to heal.

Cindy’s dad diligently kept the bandage clean, dry, and in one piece (quite the feat with a teething puppy!), and brought her back for all the follow-up visits, bandage changes, and vaccination appointments needed.

This is Cindy, just over a month after her accident. Fully vaccinated, four working legs, and all the love for her vets!

After another health scare, Colin’s vet and mom decided that some serious weight loss will only do him a world of good. In July 2025, Colin weighed 46.2kg - in January 2026 he was down to 38.5kg – losing almost 20% of his body weight.

Colin is feeling younger; not only is he needing his Librela injection for arthritis less frequently; he is also on a lower dose thanks to his new weight, saving his mom a couple hundred Rands. Thanks to Hill’s Metabolic and Mobility prescription weight loss diet, his joints are being supported while he safely loses his excess weight. Well done Colin – keep at it! 🐕🎉

The new year is already underway; here are a few tips to make it a health 2026 for your furry pet.
1. A balanced diet
Whether you’re feeding kibble, raw, or cooked, meals need to be planned to ensure all nutrient needs are met. They need a balanced mix of proteins, vitamins, minerals, fats, and fibres – not just chicken and rice.
2. Fresh water
In cats and especially senior pets, ensuring adequate water intake is important for general health and kidney function. Try having multiple sources of water, mixing up the location of the water sources, and adding enticing new options such as pet fountains. Adding water to their meals and feeding wet food regularly can also boost their hydration.
3. Mental and physical enrichment
All dogs need walking, playing, training, or some other form of enrichment and physical exercise. Cats need to play, climb, and explore, and can even be trick trained! A lot of unwanted behaviour in our pets stems from being under stimulated. These activities also strengthen the human-animal bond and help to keep your pet a healthy weight.
4. Regular vet visits and vaccinations
In a country like ours, dangerous and deadly diseases are waiting on your doorstep. Vaccinating your pets regularly will keep them safe and prevent the spread of these illnesses. Regular trips to the vet can also pick up early signs of conditions such as cardiac and kidney failure or cancer.
5. Monitoring their routine
Keen owners know to keep an eye on the following: Your pet’s eating habits, water intake, urination, defecation, and activity. They can’t voice their problems, but by observing subtle changes in routine, we can pick up on problems without them having to say a word.
