Po Update

Back at the vets yesterday with Po, Miss and Chief, it was their regularly scheduled vaccine and health check.

Obviously, Po wouldn't be getting vaccinated. After Saturday's uneventful 3-day f***l I wanted to check in regarding next steps.

Dr Doucet took a quick moment with me and went over anemia (the way ot rolled off his tongue, I'm confident he brain has been working on this puzzle. Was Po,s body not producing, was something stealing it, was his body not filtering. We ruled out liver shunt. Were hoping for hook or whip worms, which are difficult to catch shedding (when the techs can see them)

Monday his anemia #'s were worse. We decided to treat for hook/whip worms anyway. Parasites stealing the sugary goodness that is this baby.

Po gained 25g last Thursday and again on Friday. Then flattened Saturday, sunday and Monday. (A 10 gram gain this morning).

In addition to the meds, as a hail Mary, I mixed up a batch of Satin Balls (with vet permission, this is a team event), enthusiast eating has never been Po's downfall, but its next level with these meat balls lol

They are designed to put healthy weight on a dog quickly. They have lots of protein and iron, things the boy is desperately needing.

Dr Doucet ran this all by the Specialist at Maritime (team event) and it was noted that while his anemia was worse, his regenerative numbers were better...

So, he may have been turning a corner without these new measures.

Either way, this morning I am cautiously optimistic. His endurance, movement and brightness have improved.

Instead falling over like a panda, he is only half rolling and re-entered himself much easier. He's all over the house, which is new, he has not explored before yesterday. Thus movement is faster and he walks longer. He even voluntarily gets onto the balance bag!

Keep sending him thoughts vibes and prayers. He is by no means out of the woods, he will need to sustain energy, weight increases, mobility after the meds have completed their life cycle and once removed from the food supplement

Cfia seems to have an issue with a single, cared for/owned horse, but a bus is fine.

Make it make sense

Anyway... it would seem the US is taking it seriously!

This from one of the exporters.

Its never made sense to me that they drive by/through the population of NS (x many times) but can't find adopters closer to home, in their own country.

Who knew screw worm would help restore some balance in our own over population?

The chaos in this 3rd and final balance bag series

Screech chewing on the bag, Po at 26 seconds looking at the camera as if to say "you guys seeing this?"

This challenge happened so fast! I honestly believed it would take days of practice and naps.

Nope! This boy is doing it

Quickly I rewrote the script in my head and moved to making the food the challenge. Higher, lower, enticing him to move around the balance bag.

Challenge after challenge, he just kept checking the boxes

I had i totally moved the bag into the corner to "force" Po to get on it instead of walk around.

This little monkey is gonna give his all to the case of the missing muscles!

Its a dance.

Good news: Po has gained more weight, 1.90 kg now.

What that looks like, a struggle to have his muscles keep up, he gained more in 2 days than the last 2 weeks. Cha cha cha

Today I collected the 3rd p**p in a row and took it in for testing. While we weren't hoping for hook or whip worm, we were also hoping for them that would be the easiest answer for the anemia and protein. Cha cha cha.

He has coccidia, which is being treated now but, not an answer cha cha cha

His walking today is harder, but hes doing it. He is happy and loves to play bitey hands from a lay down position. He seems less dull.

Rooming with Screech is a positive, but may also be tiring for him. The extra navigation, crawling over top or around. The extra play and mental stimulation is also harder.

So, for now, we treat the coccidia. Take that step forward and assess again in a few days

Let's circle back to the post with the broom (https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1436650101825952&id=100064429280821)

We tend to throw pups into the deep end of the pool. Collar + leash + walk. Or tossing them onto a crate and expecting them to work put our expectations.

I thought Screech was going to be a broom chaser, so I set up the video.

I asked him to do algebra before teaching him to add.

I had comments that ran the gamut on what did or didn't go wrong.

I was being too permissive (didn't take control or take away the broom)

I wasn't being permissive enough (let him have it, he's a baby)

My priority with this guy is to raise a pup i can live with. I don't care if he can sit on command, I don't want daily life being frustrating for either if us.

I start there. Potty habits, crate training, basic manners, life things.

Mops and brooms here are daily events, they aren't negotiable

So what does teaching him to add look like?

Backing up, breaking it down into baby steps. Setting him up to win.

Giving him distance, him behind a gate or tethered.

Slowing the movement of the broom so prey drives aren't triggered.

Duration: 2 minutes a few times a day.

Positive isn't permissive. It is setting him up to self monitor, without the struggle.

Positive gets smaller, as in I break the exercise he's struggling with into incremental steps

Aversive gets bigger.. yell no, scruff shake, hit him with the broom.

I'd rather take a step back to gain a lifetime of forward. I would also rather he understood and performed by choice rather than because he is being told.

Squish was having a dream, I tried to capture the twitching. His ears perked with the sound of the video turning on

At 11 seconds I purposefully sighed. He sighs back at me

I first realized this was happening years ago with my boy Buffer. An English bull terrier I never wanted but couldn't imagine my life without. The boy who saved me.

After I left the abusive relationship I was in, my nervous system was a train wreck. My entire days had been crafted around my ex'es needs. To the point I no longer had an individual identity. It was how to keep him happy/calm... not angry. I reframe the ridiculous lengths now as self care. And they were, they kept me alive.

Once I had left, I had a lot of time with nothing to do and it felt like danger to my nervous system.

Without knowing I was pacing and sighing (your body enforcing deep breathing and emotional regulation).

2 things were happening Buffer was pacing and sighing. I honestly felt like there was something medically wrong with him. Why wasn't he settling? Why is he sighing all the time? Is he in pain? Is this neurological?

My mom had called and asked how I was doing. I shared I was worried about Buff, and in fact, he was pacing right now. She asked what I was doing. I was pacing

That boy, was mimicking me. He was indeed so tied to me, that if I suffered, he was gonna make sure I wasn't alone in it.

Squish is my boy. Sprout looks at me with a "don't get any of that on me" when it comes to mental drains. Physical, if I'm crying, they swap, Sprout does her best to console and Squish gets distance

How about your dogs? Do the tap out. Mimic? Ignore?

Have you noticed?

Try it, while your sitting having a snuggle, let out a deep sigh, see what happens.

Dogs are cool 😎 🕶

Video 2 of 3

Po manages to not only get on the balance bag, but move from lack of control to a balanced stand

I expected the wobbly legs, I was thrilled with his control. I can not express how little muscle tone this baby has, this was nothing short of astonishing

My goal was to get 2 feet on and him taking treats. That is all.

This boy is determined to get better, 4 feet with minutes

Animals are so resilient. Po lives in this moment, not any moment when he wasn't feeling well. He doesn't feel sorry for himself, he just keeps moving forward.

Watch tomorrow for the 2rd and final video of the balance bag

When everything feels like too much, look at your feet.

It’s so easy to spiral, isn't it? You’re standing there, looking at a mess—literal or metaphorical—and suddenly your brain is calculating the next 20 steps. You’re worrying about tomorrow, stressing about next week, and drowning in a mental to-do list that feels a mile long. Your heart rate goes up, your chest gets tight, and you paralyze yourself before you even start.

When that overwhelm hits, stop. Take a breath. Come back into your body.

You don’t have to figure out the next 20 steps right now. You don't have to solve the whole future. All you actually have to do—all you can do—is the next thing.

Maybe the next thing is washing a single dish.

Maybe it's cleaning up a literal puddle of puke.

Maybe it’s just drinking a glass of water or sending one email.

Whatever it is, shrink your world down to just that one, singular action. Do it with your full attention. Once that's done, look down and find the next one thing.

When we stop trying to micro-manage the entire horizon and just focus on the step right in front of us, a funny thing happens: the path opens up, the weight lifts, and it all works out.

Just do the next thing. You’ve got this. 🤍
