More than twenty years after opening its doors, Bargain Basket has grown from a modest retail concept into a familiar presence in the daily lives of many families throughout the City of Roses. For its owner, Leonardo Goncalves, the store’s vision - to be an establishment that serves the everyday needs of the community - has expanded just as smoothly as customer demand has evolved… and so have its shelves!
Originally focused on plastic kitchenware, the store has adapted by listening closely to shoppers. “As we listened to our customers and responded to their needs," Goncalves says, "we evolved into the general store they proudly describe as: ‘You’ll find everything you need - and a little more.’ "
While product range has broadened significantly, Goncalves is clear that the underlying purpose has not shifted. The commitment to community remains central. Stationery has become one of the store’s strongest pillars, particularly in a country where affordability matters deeply. “We are proud to support parents who are looking for the best balance between quality and affordability for their children’s education,” he continues, “...contributing to the development of future professionals in our country is one of our greatest motivations.”
Over the years, Bargain Basket has supported schools and local initiatives by responding directly to their needs, often sourcing items beyond its usual inventory when required. The turning point, he explains, didn't happen all at once, but in a pattern repeated year after year. “When they walk through our doors, they are not just customers - they are part of our family.” Expansion into the North was driven less by ambition than by practicality. Customers frequently raised concerns about safety and parking in the city centre. “Opening the North branch gave customers a choice - allowing them to shop in a location that suits their convenience and comfort,” he explains. The new branch was designed as a smaller, carefully curated version of the original store, focused on core product lines but open to growth through customer input. “It’s a store where you may come in for one item but leave with several great bargains in your basket,” he adds.
In a retail environment dominated by national chains, Goncalves believes Bargain Basket’s strength lies in attentiveness. “While large national chains focus on mass production and standardised offerings, we concentrate on sourcing the specific, everyday items our customers are looking for.” The difference, he suggests, is personal engagement - listening, adapting, and responding quickly. “We are here to help and provide what you need. We invite you to let us be part of your family and support you in nurturing the young professionals growing up in your home.”
