To whom it may concern

A good number of draft horse people, -farriers, -enthusiasts have voiced their concerns over the practice of "Scotch Bottom Shoeing" . The practice has reached often times grotesque levels and is considered very detrimental to the animal's well-being if not down right abusive.

I would urge the American Farriers Journal to pick up the topic, perhaps in collaboration with the "Draft Horse Journal" of Waverly , Iowa.

If left unchecked, i firmly believe this practice will steadily attract the attention of animal welfare groups and shed an increasingly negative light on the industry, much like the case of soring walking horses, etc.

I have asked several veterans in the shoeing industry if they would agree to take part in a round table discussion. all seemed very agreeable. it is a topic with much depth and many facets to explore.

Dear fellow farriers, horse lovers, teamsters, veterinarians,JUDGES, riders, trainers and equine enthusiasts of every persuasion. i would like for this page to start a conversation about the practice of "Scotch Bottom" Shoeing. please help me do so by sharing your knowledge and experience in the matter or by simply asking questions.. i know the term may be foreign to many but all too familiar to some. share your best and worst examples through pictures if you can. after seeing some of the finest and most grotesque examples of this practice this summer at various draft horse events, i feel it is necessary to draw the line between showmanship and abuse.. i'm looking forward to anyone's input. thanks.
