Have you ever wondered what happens when pets get cancer?
Sometimes we can do radiation or chemo with the goal of never harming quality of life.
Herbie had a nose bleed, he got a CT under anesthesia (to hold completely still) to diagnose a nasal tumor. Without radiation it was a 4-6 month prognosis. With radiation, it could give him another 1-2 years.
There are only a handful of cyberknife radiation treatments for pets in the country. This is very targeted radiation which means less damage to other tissues and therefore far less side effects with being able to deliver a higher dose to kill the cancer cells. Luckily one of them is only 1.5 hours from Herbie’s house.
Thanks to Herbie’s Pet Insurance, 70% of his treatment costs will be reimbursed. He had to spend 3 days in a hotel with his mom (me), and go under anesthesia for 1-2 hours each day, then had his meds reversed and went home (er, to the hotel). He did have some more nose bleeds, and mild head aches but he should feel a lot better after his tumor shrinks down and he’s home relaxing now!
Any questions about pet oncology or pet insurance feel free to comment.

Caring for family and friends pets is one of my favorite parts. I didn’t think I would like it when I graduated but it’s worth the stress.
This girl is my sister, Luci, my dads’s puppy, who with the help of Worthy Tails Animal Rescue, he rescued from the south this spring. It’s been a pleasure watching her grow, and being her doctor.
She was running around back to normal days after her spay surgery, against my advice, but at least my sutures held. 😅❤️

Cash at 8 weeks and 1 year 8 weeks ❤️. We’ve been doing the mask thing as long as he can remember. I’ve enjoyed watching him and his cowlick on his nose grow over the last year.

PSA: Deer ticks are most active from October to February in Pennsylvania. Especially those in the nymph stage. Any time it’s above 32 degrees, they are out looking for a meal!

They can be easy to miss on a furry animal. Be sure to use a reliable, vet recommended flea/tick preventative year round to prevent Lyme, Anaplasma and other tick borne diseases that are endemic to our area.

Did you know fall is also the worst season for fleas that can also carry disease?

Feel free to reach out to me or your vet for what reliable products they recommend.

Even the biggest patients need fear free vet visits.
Sweet Penny (short for Pennsylvania) came to see me today and preferred to have her exam go at her own pace on top of the bench. 🥰
All of her barely fit on the scale at 139 lbs.

Bella was one of my favorite patients this week.
She had a bladder ultrasound and made herself at home to help with her records after. 😻
