We are dedicated to rescuing, providing medical care, fostering and adopting out stray and abandoned Australian Cattle Dogs (heelers). TCDR rescues heelers from the streets and city and county shelters throughout Texas.

Happy Tails from Pepper! 🐾💕🐾

We got the sweetest update from Pepper’s dad and couldn’t wait to share!

Pepper is doing wonderfully in her forever home. She loves chasing her ball and even tags along with her Dad to the office daily, where she makes her rounds collecting treats (and hearts). You’ll find her snoozing on her bed or the office couch when she's not on treat duty.

She’s also been busy trying to convince her kitty sister, Kali, to play, but Kali reminds her daily that everything happens on her terms.

And just when we thought Pepper’s life couldn’t get any better, she’s soaking up golden hour at Zilker Park! This lucky girl is living the dream in one of Austin’s most iconic spots.

We love seeing our dogs living their best lives. Thank you to Pepper’s family for giving her so much love!

☀️ Summer temps have arrived in Texas, and that means more outdoor fun with your favorite four-legged friend!

Before you head out for adventure, take a moment to make sure your pup stays safe in the heat. A few simple precautions can go a long way:

☀️ Always provide access to clean water and a shady spot when your dog is outside.

🚫 Never leave your dog in a parked car—not even for a minute, even if windows are cracked or you’re in the shade.

🔥 If it feels hot to you, it’s even tougher on your dog.

👣 Test the ground with your bare foot—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Pavement can cause painful burns.

🌅 Aim for walks and playtime during the cooler hours—early morning or evening is best.

🐾 Happy Tails Pupdate!

It’s been three years since Mattie found her forever home. Her Mom sent us this fabulous update.

This sweet Heeler has blossomed into quite the personality! She’s a big fan of car rides, daily walks, and her favorite soft toys—especially the ones with long, floppy arms she can shake, shake, shake!

Mattie is as affectionate as they come—she gives the best hugs (unless you’re a squirrel or opossum, of course).

Mattie’s sweet Mom said they are so grateful she’s living her best life with them. We are too!

Some heroes wear boots, live on ranches, and open their hearts—and homes—to dogs in need. Scott and April, longtime volunteers, are heroes.

This incredible couple has been fostering with Texas Cattle Dog Rescue for years, helping countless dogs heal, grow, and find their forever homes. Along the way, they’ve “foster failed” four times… and we can’t blame them one bit. Hannah Blue, Travis, Barley, and Rex (aka Sexy Rexy) weren’t just fosters—they became family.

These lucky dogs now spend their days doing what they were born to do: working cattle, watching the herd, and living their best ranch dog lives. It’s a testament to what a loving, knowledgeable foster home can do.

We honestly couldn’t do this work without devoted fosters like them. Their commitment to the breed and to rescue is unmatched, and we are endlessly grateful for the lives they’ve touched—both human and canine.

😍 This handsome boy has it all—smarts, sweetness, and a heart full of loyalty. Ace is the perfect mix of play and chill: he’s down for a run or ride in the car but just as happy lounging nearby while you work or curling up next to you at the end of the day.

🎾 In foster care, Ace has blossomed into a well-mannered gentleman. He’s fully crate-trained, house-trained, and respectful in the home. He is currently fostered in a home with a female Heeler and loves to play politely—what a good boy!

🏡 Ace thrives with structure and connection. He’s looking for an adult home or one with older kids (10+), no cats, and a person or family who will include him in their daily lives. If you’re looking for a loving sidekick who will be your shadow and your snuggle buddy, Ace is ready.

🩵Ace is 2 years old, weighs 45 pounds, is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and is on heartworm and flea prevention. His tail was docked before rescue, but that doesn’t stop his happy butt wiggles!

Did someone say puppies? 🥰Introducing Walker and Ranger!

These two cuties are from a tiny litter of just two pups. We rescued them and their momma, a beautiful, small heeler named Aria. They were rescued from deplorable conditions, having been abandoned and locked in a room with several other dogs, including two male German Shepherd mixes. We assume one or both dogs were the dads, but we aren't entirely sure.

RANGER 🐾 black/tan
Ranger is charming and loves upside-down belly scratches. He’s a lover boy! He is super playful and is learning to come when you call his name. Ranger is doing great with his kennel training.

WALKER 🐾 white/red
Walker is an adorable pup with a bit of an independent streak. He is very playful and likes to adventure on his own when outside. He is doing great with his kennel training. Walker loves his squeaky toys! He loves scratches and hugs and then wants to play.

These pups were born in the shelter on March 3, 2025. Since then, they have been living in a foster home with their momma, receiving excellent care and socialization. They are happy, healthy, active pups full of puppy fun and antics.
