Our research team, led by Dr. Linda Jacobson in partnership with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue in South Carolina, was honored to present interim data from our prospective controlled trial comparing 2-dose to 3-dose melarsomine for heartworm infection at the Triennial Symposium of the American Heartworm Society in Dallas this week.

The study was designed to identify a treatment that incorporated superb safety, a high cure rate, and a condensed treatment duration to minimize length of stay in the shelter. The biggest differences between our experimental protocols and traditional ones were that melarsomine was started on Day 14 of the 28-day doxycycline treatment, which shortened the entire treatment course by 6 weeks. A complete description of the study design can be found at https://sheltermedicine.vetmed.ufl.edu/research/current-studies/heartworm-treatment-study/

Dr. Jacobson reported that preliminary findings showed extremely low complication rates and no mortality in either treatment group. Follow-up testing at 6-9 months post-treatment is still underway, but of 104 dogs tested so far, only 3 were still positive and may require retreatment for a cure.

The Lucky Dog compressed 2-dose melarsomine protocol looks like a very promising option for shelters, where the duration of treatment and exercise restriction and cost of treatment are important. Using this protocol, dogs can complete their heartworm treatment within 2 weeks of shelter admission and continue to their adoptive homes for 2 more weeks of doxycycline and a month of exercise restriction with a very low likelihood of complications and a very high likelihood of treatment success.

Dr. Jacobson, from the Toronto Humane Society, is joined by co-investigators Dr. Julie Levy and Dr. Jessie Dyer from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Brian DiGangi from First Coast No More Homeless Pets, Dr. Adrienne VanVlake and Mirah Horowitz from Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, and Lucky Dog's shelter care team led by Stephanie Moore. We are so grateful to Lucky Dog Animal Rescue for being our amazing partner in this study, to PetSmart Charities for their incredible grant support that made the study possible, and to IDEXX for subsidized diagnostic testing services.

🎊🎊ADOPTED 🎊🎊
⚡️⚡️small dog lovers, this one’s for you!⚡️⚡️
This petite little lady is Sadie. She is about 5 months old, 5lbs and we think she is some kind of Chihuahua/Terrier mix of cuteness. Sadie is still a tad shy with first impressions but she does love when people baby talk her. 🥰 She would be good in any home with other pets or kids. 🐶🐱👶🏻
Her adoption fee is $100 which includes spay, age appropriate vaccines, microchip and a bag of food. Please email [email protected] your home info (if you rent/own, other adults/kids/pets) to set up an appointment to adopt her!

Right now, more than 1,000 animals are in the care of Animal Care Centers (ACC), NYC’s open-intake shelter. Dogs are being stacked in crates. Hallways are full. They are currently caring for more than 500 cats. Resources are stretched impossibly thin.

We’ve always focused on finding homes for the animals in our care — but when another shelter is in a crisis of this magnitude, we can’t turn away.

If you’re thinking about adopting or fostering, and don’t find your match at Bideawee, please consider ACC. They have locations in Manhattan, Staten Island and Queens and all are filled beyond capacity with loving animals in desperate need of homes. The animals there need us, ALL OF US.

Because at this moment, it’s not about which shelter they come from. It’s about getting them home. 🐾 🙏
