Good morning, everyone! I’ve been a little MIA the last couple of days, and I’m going to try my best to be more attentive moving forward. It’s just been a busy couple of days, and on top of that, I’ve been feeling a bit down. 💔
As much as I know it’s inevitable when owning farm animals, losing one never gets easier. I’m so sentimental and get so attached, so when I lose one, I really take it hard. 😢
Sadly, I lost Butterscotch unexpectedly Sunday night. She and Opal were in a separate pen from most of my other mature birds since I don’t have many muture roosters that aren’t related to them. I thought this pen was the best option because it had a non-related roo, and I was looking forward to getting some chicks from them.
Unfortunately, being silkies (and not the brightest), they struggled with the automatic coop door and kept roosting in the outdoor section of the coop instead of going inside. I’d been manually putting them in every night, hoping they’d learn. That night, I got home later than usual, and by then, something (likely a raccoon) had ripped the chicken wire open and taken her. 😭
The most frustrating part? My cousin and I had just talked about reinforcing that pen with hardware cloth and were planning to do it Monday morning.
Butterscotch was my favorite chick from my very first hatch this year and one of only two keepers. She was so loved and spoiled, and I was so excited for her to be part of my partridge breeding program. I really hope I can hatch another like her soon.
I wasn’t sure if I should share this, but I want to be transparent and show all sides of my chicken journey and sadly, this is part of it. I’ve learned from this and will move forward more cautiously. Butterscotch deserves some love and appreciation today. ~ Rest in peace my sweet baby. ❤️
