Callie's Place Welcome to Callie's Place! A 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama Callie’s Place is a very active animal rescue at present.

We currently house many dogs and cats that are up for adoption as well we provide lifelong sanctuary for many others who for various reasons are not available for adoption. We speak at churches, schools, civic clubs and other events on the benefits and necessity of spay and neuter. We are a no-kill rescue, which means once an animal makes it to us it is safe. Goals:
1. To improve the lives of pet

s and people in West Alabama with an emphasis on our communities by giving unnurtured, unloved animals a second, real chance.
2. Teaching children and adults about the proper care of pets and domestic animals
3. And teaching about the benefits of spay and neuter thru
a. Mobile spay neuter clinic
b. Partnerships with local vet offices and universities
4. Establishment of a Callie’s Place Shelter

Good morning everyone

For those who have tried to contact me recently and been unsuccessful I owe you an apology. I now have a new phone and when we finally got it setup after 2.5 hours this weekend on the phone with technical support I’m getting tons of voicemails, emails and messages….dating back for weeks. Many of my older contacts did not transfer and at this point there is no icloud backup to try that will give better results so if you text me and I ask who you are that’s why! As well the blocked numbers are at this point all unblocked as best I can tell, Verizon was not able to do anything on their side to “unblock” across the board. Most older text conversations also didn’t make the transfer, lost a lot of precious pictures and my vet notes dating back for years on each animal was also lost but thankfully I am old school and have a hard copy.

Technology is wonderful until it isn’t.

How do they know ?

How does a puppy absolutely look straight into your heart and see the cracks ?

How do they know exactly what you need at that moment?

How do they figure these things out?

I think i may know.

Because they are just a dog. And that is more than enough. I’ll take that today, tomorrow and every day thereafter.

Little Hatter read me like a book this evening and I appreciate it. The cool part is that he’s usually not clingy and has important puppy business to attend to but not tonight. He had one mission and that was to show me how much he loves me and to try to make me better.

It appears that tomorrow I’ll be saying “see you later” to my buddy Dinomyte. Dr. White said that my ancient buddy’s body has just worn out. For a week I have tried everything to get him to eat, to show some sign that the antibiotics are working but we talked yesterday and tonight and my buddy said that he’s ready to go but I’m sure not ready for him to leave.

To many this seems ridiculous and I can understand your feelings. But Dinomyte is not just a tortoise to me, he’s my family. He follows me like a dog just at a little slower rate and has bit my toes more times than I can count but he’s super old and it’s his time.

Yesterday I was leaning towards him trying to get him to eat and he suddenly booped the side of my face and rested his head on my arm. I knew at that moment it was goodbye. Once again my gentle old friend set calmy while my tears dropped onto his shell.

Giving him freedom from his worn out body is my last gift to him, I’ve held on too long at this point I worry. I just wanted with every ounce of me for him to rebound.

Wait for me at the bridge. I’ll be expecting that fabulous side eye , you will know many when you get there and however you all talk let them know I love them forever.

The turkeys are growing…. Seems they developed a little not so nice behavior towards each other and two ended up with injured beaks. A week of separation and medication and all three are growing and getting along better but we are moving slowly.

Soon they will be in their large new coop but we must get a gigantic dead pine tree cut first. Safety first! Don’t worry…these three enjoy living inside and were beyond ready to be scooped up and returned to their nice cool spot inside.

The purpose of the small pen around the crates is for safety as the birds have no natural fear of dogs and might stick their head out to say hi. It also gives us a little extra security in case the rogue hounds come blazing through even though we are aware it would not stop them it would help.

The swimming pool aka the big water bowl was the big hit for today. No dirty birds here!

Happy Saturday !

Busy day ahead but first must share pics of my wild Friday night.

My number one uno best buddy and I watched The Profit and got to hang out. Popcorn for me and a Churro treat (or two) for Millie.

Millie is 16 years old and is the best friend a person could have. When she realized I was actually going to sit down and not act like a jack in the box she was so excited.

They are not with us nearly long enough.

Happy Thursday !

So I got a message from a follower asking “why Pipey is always standing on his back legs wanting to be held, it didn’t seem to be normal puppy behavior”. So I thought it might be helpful and a little fun to address with a post. I want to make it clear that we welcome questions and concerns as that shows people care and we love questions! (I also replied privately and was given her blessing to share in a post).

First Pipey and his siblings are not typical puppies, they are extremely smart and sometimes too smart for their own good. They are also what I call “old soul” puppies. They seem more mature and interested in non typical puppy things moreso than many others. This is not to say that they aren’t goofy, silly and playful because they are. They are also stubborn and pout like typical puppies when they don’t get their way. So momma Deed blessed them with her smarts and her grit. Every day I see more of her and her temperament in these puppies and that is a good thing.

I got with Pipey and he agreed to make some “big boy” pictures for me to share so that everyone can see him standing and looking like a little puppy model.

So the mystery is solved…. Pipey can actually stand and walk on his own there is no physical issue and he is not afraid (his preference remains to be carried of course). Pipey’s main issue, being spoiled and we have full plans to continue.

This evening the puppies and dogs got extra playtime since it was a little cooler and Pipey just wanted to be held. Someone needs this loving pup in their life. … but until that happens I’ll be soaking up that sweet affection.

If you are looking for a pup that gets along with cats and dogs but bonds closely with his human person, Pipey is your guy.

(No clue how he’s scuffed his head but believe me he’s gotten all the kisses because of it- he knows how to get all the sympathy for his boo boos)

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Thought I’d share some cuteness with you.

Little Beasley once lived in a home where he and brother Bryce were never allowed to go outside. Their whole life as I understand was confined to a single room where layer after layer of papers served as cleaning. And somehow through this existence Beasley’s leg was broken but never medically attended to. That’s why he holds it up. Life confined to four walls was not ideal but somehow these two held it together.

I remember the first few weeks after they joined us when everything was new and scary to them. But they are chihuahuas (mixes) so there was an equal amount of grit and determination too.

Now Beasley and Bryce have freedom to run and play and even drink from the turtle pond. Their life must seem so big!

This picture is cute in its own right but knowing his history makes it mean so much more. I often wonder if they must have thought that life inside the room was all that there was for all those years. And then through intervention and then good fortune they landed with us at Callie’s Place. Which is by far nothing fancy or special, magical maybe 😉. But to them it must have seemed like another planet and boy have they embraced it. That’s why we do rescue. It’s not about big adoption numbers or being recognized, it’s all about them and for them. It’s for the ones who need time to acclimate, it’s for the ones like Beasley who have physical issues and it’s for those who deserve a life of just being a dog. Your support gives Beasley his “big”adventures until his forever home comes along.

Bart getting in too close to tell me he’s had his water and it’s time for training. Bartholomew is planning on becoming a service dog or seeing how he best serves i helping others.

From being thrown out on a construction pile and being left for dead by heartless owners … he’s now progressing through training to become a certified training dog. That part will be done by professionals we are covering the basics. He has already passed the temperament testing stage because that is what rockstar dogs do.

Bart has a long way to go but he has already brought joy to several children who were previously terrified of dogs amd has shown them not to be afraid. Now one of the families has adopted a pup. So Bart is already saving lives. Whatever the future holds we don’t know but we are going to enjoy today because having Bart with us is a gift sloppy wet face and all.

Happy Sunday !

Different kind of rescue this morning.

Last night we found this baby mockingbird hopping on the driveway. Somehow the dogs had missed him/her. So I got a crate and placed him in it and left it on the porch elevated for the night.

Wake up to hear both his Mom and Dad and him all talking. Mom and Dad had not forgotten him and they were letting me know they wanted their son released immediately. I complied and baby bird is in the elevated garden bed and mom has been down to his side while dad stays on power line ready to tag our heads.

We have done our part and now nature and hopefully some rest for baby bird will take it from here.

It costs nothing to be kind and show compassion.
