Senior dogs often have different goals for their walks. Millie isn’t going to go for anything long or strenuous, but keeping her body moving and her mind active are more important. So we move slowly, sniff a lot, hunt for treats in grass, and always listen when she says she ready to go back home.

So proud of Charlie and her people today! Charlie and I walked on the opposite side of the street from her human which is such a big step for her.

When I first met Charlie she didn’t even want to take treats directly from my hand. She gets nervous around new people and has some really strong separation anxiety. With some support from vet behaviorist, separation anxiety specialists and lots of hard work she’s come a long way in the few months we’re working together.

Often the biggest wins look like calm, simple walks.

Timber showing off his favorite skill: using his hound nose!

Sweet boy is still a puppy and still figuring out how to use his brain, nose and ears all at the same time but he’s doing so good! He loves to follow scent trails on our walks and sniff out any body who may be close by to give him pets.

Falling leaves are such good enrichment! They function as a snuffle mat for scattered treats, hold onto scents for things that have passed through before hand, sensory play with crunchy leaves.

Fast moving wheeled things can be VERY exciting to herding dogs. They’ve been bred to watch and move livestock, making quick movement an exciting and enticing stimulus. Ruby really wants to herd bikes so we move over, shorten the leash and play a game of catch instead.

We work with her instincts by making the treats move (throwing them), using crunchy treats to allow for a “nip” and “chimp” sensation and letting her get her desire to chase and nip out in more appropriate ways like playing with balls, tug and appropriate chew toys!

Shared sniffs can be so nice, but also a spot for potential conflicts.

One of the less thought about places that resource guarding can show up is sniffing! While sniffing is relaxing, having another dog close by while trying to sniff can be stressful for some dogs. Like anything enjoyable, having someone interrupt it can be frustrating or upsetting. So if your dogs prefer to take turn rather than share sniffs, be patient and give them some extra scratches while you wait for their good social skills!

Pepper and Pretzel here are really good at sharing sniffs and giving each other space to enjoy them.

Fritz loves rubbing up on the tall grass! It feels nice, it’s full of smells and it flushes out some bugs for him to chase.

Urban areas and neighborhoods can still be full of enriching and novel experiences! It’s sometimes a little less obvious, but this patch of unmoved grass along a fence gave up 5 minutes of novel and enriching engagement.
