Meet Pico!! This goodest boy is located in Tuscan, Arizona and is available for adoption within 300 miles of his rescue.

He is a 6 yr old Maltese mix who is great with kids AND all animals INCLUDING proven fine with cats!! We told you he was the goodest boy!! He also loves all people and kids! Pico has not met anyone who isn't A-OK with him!

He seems housebroken, but his folks are still getting to know him.
Look at his sweet eyes and that adorable scruffy face...Pico came to his rescue from the Arizona Humane Society. Pico has some kidney disease, and his blood values are high. He has WONDERFUL temperament and is a playful and happy dog who shows no signs of illness. He deserves the very best of homes, let's network Pico into a home for the holidays. His adopter should be willing to work with their veterinarian on the best ways to monitor and support him. HAARBOR pledges a $400 veterinary grant to the adopter of Pico!! I am so sorry that the page has been so quiet. Our Sanctuary is busy as ever and we are still giving grants. I was unable to keep up with the listings for now but I hope to get back to it soon! For now, here are some of our current residents!!

We have already received donations in honor of Betty White and we are SO grateful!! Betty was a tireless supporter of animal welfare and we know she would have loved and appreciated our mission of helping hospice and medically special needs animals!! Every dime goes directly to the animals we help!! ❤️❤️ We are currently fundraising to bring Maya, a tiny senior chihuahua across the country and into our sanctuary where she will receive the surgeries she needs and happily live out her life loved and prioritized!! We are so happy to partner with the *amazing* and inspiring California rescue, Umbrella of Hope to bring Maya home!! We can never thank Beverly Rogers enough for her true kindness in volunteering to nanny Maya across the country to us!!

Hi everyone! Wow, it has been a LONG time since we posted. Unfortunately, with the veterinary industry being very understaffed and under massive and unprecedented demand, my day job as a veterinarian has prevented me from posting our listings but we are hugely excited to get back to it soon and we have money to offer adoption veterinary grants!! Listings will resume this spring! And in the meantime, stay tuned for a very special addition (traveling across the country!) to the HAARBOR Sanctuary coming up soon!

Oakland, California - Meet Galadriel! She is a 15 yr old, 14 lb, spayed female Poodle mix. This dog needs an ANGEL of an adopter who understands she was horrifically neglected for a large part of her life and is slow to trust. She needs a quiet home who will allow her time to realize that she is loved and cared for, she is heartbreaking.

We think she is beautiful despite the lack of medical care or hygiene care that she should have received from her previous family. Galadriel came to Umbrella of Hope from San Jose Animal Care Center . Her ears were so badly infected, they took months to resolve. One hear had to be partially amputated.

She also had masses that have been biopsied and were benign. She also was in bad need of a dental cleaning which she had and is feeling so much better . Her coat was matted and hurting her. She had a grooming and felt better. She needed a short cut so the vet could see everything going on under that fur.

Here are notes from her foster mom: Galadriel was a mess when she came into rescue. Her ears were so badly infected that one had to be partially amputated. After a lot of treatment, it’s all healing nicely and her poodley hair is curly enough that it isn’t all that noticeable. Fortunately she doesn’t blame people for her woes and is a great companion. A good name for her would be “Shadow” because she’s always nearby. I have dog beds all over the house and if I look down, she’ll be napping in the closest one – following me as I move around. Picking up a dog bed and tossing it around is one of her favorite “sports”. Once it lands in the right spot, she settles in for a nap. Unless she’s decided that she needs her nap on your lap. Then it is up the couch steps and PLOP! Anything you happen to be holding gets nosed away so she can get the scratchies she wants.

She has legs that are really long for her body and is kind of awkward – would never make it in a circus act! She does not jump up onto the furniture and stumbles up/down the doggie steps. But the klutziness adds to the fun of watching her play. If she sees you might be getting ready to go out, she bounces all over in the excitement of maybe getting a walk. She’s not used to a leash but doesn’t pull and I believe she’d learn very quickly.

For our car rides, she’s been on the back seat and attached to it with a short leash. She settles right down and takes a nap. No anxiety, no problems. She does this so well that I haven’t bothered to try a crate or kennel. She pretty much ignores my two other dogs and even tolerates my neighbor’s visiting puppy. She’ll nip if puppy gets too pesky but it’s to warn him, not to harm him.

I feed a feral cat on my deck and Galadriel will chase it if she sees it. Her hearing is very poor and she has little vision in one eye. Because of past pain and some uncomfortable treatment, she is sometimes snappy if she’s caught by a surprise movement near her head. She’ll also snap to protect herself if she feels endangered by unusual handling. I would not trust her with young children who might not be cautious --we do not have strict age restrictions as all children are different but our best estimate is 10 years+. Strangers coming into the house are also a problem. Her immediate reaction is to growl and threaten them. My friends are dog knowledgeable so we haven’t had a bite and she’s friendly once they’ve been here a few minutes. If I had a new visitor, I’d put her behind a gate until they’ve been in the house for a while. I don’t think she’d do well in a household with a lot of new people coming in and out.

I give the pack a handfed snack after my meals and she patiently waits her turn and is gentle taking her share. She’s been on a lot of medications. I spoil my dogs by slipping pills into a small piece of breakfast sausage and she gobbles them down with no trouble. She is currently overweight due to needing to be on steroids for a few months for her ears but she loves to go for walks and should trim right up with proper meal portions and exercise. There is a pet door from my kitchen to our deck. Once she discovered it, she’s faithfully gone out to p*e and p**p. I have potty pads for another dog but she ignored them before she found the door. So, I really don’t know if she’s trained without her own door.

Everyone, please welcome newest HAARBOR Sanctuary resident, Jerry! He had a long day of travel and is settling in perfectly. He is thrilled to be in the ‘nursing home’ and loves his new senior siblings!

It's Celebration Sunday and we have an awesome one to share! We posted Liberty, the neurological Corgi who can't use her hind limbs and offered a $250 veterinary grant to her future family. We were SO excited to pay it out when she found the perfect home with an experienced, proactive, and loving adopter!! We are so happy for Liberty and couldn't have been happier to contribute to her care. Liberty found her perfect home thanks to someone sharing the HAARBOR post!!

Thank you to the amazing rescues who take on special needs animals knowing that they're more expensive to save, treat, and slower to find homes. You guys are the reason that so many 'less adoptable' dogs are in wonderful, loving homes and not euthanized! THANK YOU to the unicorn adopters who are willing to open up their homes and hearts to a special needs animal. They are so rewarding to have but there aren't many people out there who see that....until they adopt their first one and experience the joy themselves! And THANK YOU to our incredible HAARBOR community for all of the sharing of the posts, 100% that is how these animals found homes.

Knoxville, TN - Meet Beans! He is an adult, 12 lb, neutered male cat. Beans was submitted by a private citizen who is looking for a really perfect home for him. He is special needs and nobody wants him but the dogs in his home are not allowing him to be the interactive member of the family that he wants to be. Beans is the cutest, grumpy man you’ve ever met! He’s super cuddly and wants to be up in your bubble at all times. He likes to play! He will tolerate other cats at a distance, and dogs at a distance, but prefers to be left alone as far as other animals go. Beans is so cute, he's short and stocky. He purrs the minute you walk into the room!

They are unable to keep him due to the fact that our dogs will not leave him alone. It isn't safe for him and he is so sweet, he deserves a home where he is safe and happy.

It's Celebration Sunday and I have a great one to share!! Remember Ingrid? The beautiful and kind German Shepherd who was diagnosed with an irreversible and degenerative spinal cord disorder? Ingrid is one of the sweetest and best behaved girls but nobody wanted her because of her special needs. Home At Last Rescue stepped up and knew that they could keep her in a loving foster home until her unicorn family found her...which they did!! We've never been happier to pay out money and we sent a $200 veterinary grant to help with Ingrid's ongoing medical needs. Ingrid definitely has her happy ending and we are so grateful.

Thank you to the amazing rescues who step up to take in these animals with medical special needs. They are more expensive and less adoptable and it really takes a special group to commit to them. Thank you to the incredible adopters who step forward to welcome a special needs animal into their home and heart. These animals give us back so much more than we give them!! And finally, THANK YOU to the HAARBOR community for liking and sharing these listings out. That is how these adoptions happen, the photo comes across someone's page by chance and they know it's meant to be. This project wouldn't be the success that it is without you!! Look at this stunner! Oakley is not only gorgeous with the softest white fluffy coat and the most piercing blue eyes around, he has the MOST loving disposition! While this sweet boy will dazzle you with his looks and win you over with his puppy kisses, unfortunately he has been dealt a very sad hand with his heart.

Oakley was born with several congenital heart abnormalities, including sub-aortic and pulmonary stenosis, septal defects and valve dysplasia. He requires a very special family who will provide him with the most loving home, continuous cardiac care, and one who will make the most of their time with him however short that may be. His cardiologist report and all medical information will be provided to his adopter.

Oakley has no idea that he has these severe heart problems, he only knows that he is a spunky husky puppy! We aren't going to let him read his echocardiogram report!! He loves romping around with his foster dog siblings, cuddling up with his foster momma for nap time and of course playing with toys! Oakley shouldn't go to a household with cats.

At only nine weeks old, he is doing fantastic with house breaking, but will still need a family to work with him on normal puppy training. Huskies by nature are a high energy, rambunctious breed, so a family with husky experience would be preferred but we will talk to everybody about him! The perfect home only will be selected.
