Right on the money!

So You Think You Want a Kangal Dog?

In recent years, the Kangal Dog has exploded in popularity going from a largely unknown breed in the US, to being the new big dog everyone wants. As with all breeds that rise in popularity overnight, there is an overabundance of wannabe Kangal breeders and a dearth of those taking true responsibility for what it means to steward, breed and place these unique dogs. The Kangal Dog’s strengths are many and they have an ability to charm unlike anything I have ever witnessed in another dog breed. Yet despite their beauty, strength, incredible work ethic and their protective, deeply nurturing side, they can be very challenging dogs to raise and can walk all over an unprepared, uneducated new owner. Probably the number one cause of these dogs ending up homeless and in shelters is due to Resource Guarding, a very common behavior in all Livestock Guardian breeds and very prevalent in the Kangal Dog. Those who attempt to use fear tactics, aggression or punitive training methods to solve Resource Guarding or other behavioral issues will soon be faced with one of the breed’s most well known characteristics, not backing down from a fight. The moment you make your relationship with your dog one of opposing forces, you have just lost the battle and will end up with a dog that sees you as the enemy in fight they have no intention of losing. Other common issues that lead to homeless Kangals are not teaching the dog to accept basic handling and grooming, not teaching them to be comfortable loading in and out a car and other very basic handling that a 150lb dog MUST be comfortable with and participate in willingly in order to be cared for routinely and when sick or injured. Common misconceptions about outdated “hands-off” methods of raising Kangals when they will be working dogs add to this problem and results in dogs who cannot be handled by their owners and are a potential threat to humans due to insufficient socialization and training about what their job is. The Kangal Dog traditionally had a very close bond with their shepherds and this close bond is something you must be willing to build with a Kangal dog if you want to bring one into your life. You must be able to invest the time and effort into showing your Kangal what you expect from them in a way they can understand. They need to know that you have their best interests at heart, that they can trust you to be fair, respectful and worthy of the deep love and devotion that they will bestow on the one who proves they can cherish this great gift. If you are not able or willing to learn how to the trusted shepherd and guardian of your guardian dog, to be in a partnership where you invest in setting your partner up to succeed based on who they are and what they need, a Kangal is not for you. This is not meant to be a hurtful or dismissive statement; it is rather, a simple reality based on the requirements of this amazing breed. Love them enough to give them what they need to succeed or love them from a distance.

“Ayn” is a 3 mo. old Kangal/Pyrenean/Spanish/Pyrenees girl sired by “Axl” and out of “Infi” from Northwest Guardians. Axl is a pup from the Maya x Carlos litter from 2017. Ayn made a plane trip from Missoula, MT to Apple Springs, TX last week and has instantly taken over guarding the farm. (With grandma Maya and Uncle Judge helping.) ❤️

The babies are 8 weeks old now. By the end of the weekend I will be puppy-less. It's a ton of work but I really enjoy raising these "dogs with jobs". I can't wait for the update pics when they are fully grown, faithful, fearless guardians. ❤

You've noticed your Great Pyrenees (or perhaps other breed) has double dew claws. The question is - should they stay or should they go?

SALE PENDING! 😊- One person in my waiting list has had to back out. So the brindle girl here, (blue tip on her tail) is now available. Last one! The pups are now six weeks old and will be ready for new homes after May 17th. If you know of anyone needing a sweet, yet quite assertive female LGD, please pass this on. 😊

🌟Such an awesome update on a pup from last year's litter! I LOVE that our pups are out there being so loved and appreciated! Thanks for the update on Angus! 😊

"Just wanted to give you a quick update on Angus! We love him so much and he's such a great part of our littler family. He's very loyal and follows us every where on the ranch always watching and making sure things are ok 😊 he does a great job already of keeping the critters away from the house! Thanks so much for such an awesome pup!"
