Mossburn Community Farm Mossburn is an animal sanctuary home to approx. 100 animals. We are open to visit every day 10am-4pm

Mossburn Community Farm was originally set up in 1990 and now cares for a wide range of misused, abused, unwanted and neglected animals as well as offering spaces where possible to animals whose owners can no longer look after them. We currently have around 100 animals including horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, poultry and more! Our animals are as free range as we can allo

w them to be so we provide a great peaceful environment where visitors can get up close to the animals. As well as the animal side of things, Mossburn provides support for young people and adults with additional needs (physical, emotional, behavioural and mental) via our Animal Assisted Therapy programme, offering work experience placements, our weekly Mossburn Experience Group (where individuals with additional needs gain life skills and help to care for the animals), and more.

🩵Goodnight Primrose🩵
We said a sad goodbye to our sweet little pig Primrose yesterday.
Around two years ago Primrose began showing signs of discomfort when in season and was diagnosed with at least one growth/tumour of her reproductive system. She has been on medication since then to stop her from coming into season and also daily pain relief. These have kept her comfortable for longer than we expected but on Monday evening she refused her tea and any subsequent meals or treats offered. She was also lethargic and showing clear signs of being in discomfort. She received various injections on Tuesday morning but these didn't help at all and the only kind option was to put her to sleep. Primrose was around 10 years old and was a friendly, gentle pig who was never any trouble and spent her days exploring, eating and sleeping, usually not far from her sister Pansy.
We will keep a close eye on Pansy as she adjusts to losing Primrose but so far she isn't showing any cause for concern.
For anyone wondering, whilst we ensure all male pigs are neutered, female pigs aren't routinely neutered as it is a more complex surgery than in other animals and carries high risks.

Yesterday, all of our 15 horses and ponies had their annual visit from James, the equine dentist 🦷 It's very important to keep on top of any uneven wear, sharp edges and other unseen problems in the horses' mouths.
Some were certainly less well behaved than others but all got done 🐴 as well as Lavender the goat! As some of our horses and ponies went for many years without regular visits from a dentist before they came to us, they can present some ongoing challenges but only Toby needed a loose tooth taking out and there were no unexpected major issues for anyone else 😊
Big thank you to James and Amanda for getting through everyone, especially the ones who weren't for keeping all four feet on the floor 😇 and also to vet Beth for spending the morning with us to sedate the ones who needed it.

😊*All cleared - thank you so much!*😊

💙One last post to see if we can clear the last of our vet bill - we have just £259.73 to go!💚

A huge thankyou to everyone who has donated so far.
Some of the other animals that have needed treatment last month are:
🐴 Billy pony had mild laminitis and is now doing well whilst finishing off his medications.
🐷 Willow, Henrietta, Pansy & Primrose - needed their feet trimming.
🐏 Barney 💔 ran up quite a bill with multiple examinations, medications, lab tests and ultimately his final vet visit.
🐑 And then we had four sheep with various problems - Olivia had treatment for a suspected foot abscess, Zippy needed his horn taken off as it was growing downwards too near his face, Fraydo (the rather blue chap!) had an abscess burst at a vaccination site but he kept kicking at it and turned it into quite a nasty wound which needed some treatment and steroids to ease the irritation and then Barty (with the floppy ear) has a nasty infection at the base of his ear. He needed to be sedated so it could be properly lanced, flushed and stitched open to continue draining. Barty has had two rounds of antibiotic injections so far and there is slow improvement but he is still having to stay in so Fraydo is keeping him company, although his neck has healed up really well now.

Thank you ❤️

💚 Thanks to your amazing support, we’ve chipped away at our vet bill and now have £690.73 to go! Can we take another chunk off tonight?

We had an unexpected issue with Jake, our Highland bullock. A small neck wound turned out to be more serious than we thought - a flap of skin was hiding infection which was preventing healing and even the beginnings of flystrike due to his thick coat and the heat 😱

Jake is not a fan of being handled or touched so after some creative remote treatment (involving a glove on a stick 😆), we had to bring in the vet, Steven with his cattle crush, and a team of volunteers to help move Jake and the girls safely down the hill so we could get him in the race. He was cleaned up, treated, and ended up needing to be fully clipped! He is now much more comfortable and everything has healed up lovely - though he is not winning any hairstyle awards!
We think that with his thick coat, the recent hot weather had made him sweaty and itchy in places leading to irritation. Although this has never happened in previous years with Jake, now we know it's a potential issue we can pre-emptively clip him before summer from now on.

While the crush was on site, all three cattle had their feet trimmed by Steven and received preventative fluke & worm treatments too. The total vet bill came to £142.73.

If you can spare anything to help us cover the cost, please donate below or PayPal: [email protected] 💚

🐰 Thank You So Much – We're Halfway There! 🐰

We're so grateful to everyone who’s donated to our vet bill appeal so far! We now have £910.73 left to raise to clear the total bill.

This is Buddy, one of our sweet senior bunnies. At 9 years old, he's been struggling a bit with some age related problems and his mobility has been declining gradually. Recently, he started hopping in a high, wobblier than usual way and developed some irritation under his chin – possibly from drooling due to dental pain or trouble drinking.

Buddy went in to be sedated for x-rays, a dental procedure to file down some sharp edges, and to flush a blocked tear duct. The x-rays showed not just arthritis, but also a possible compromised disc in his spine – likely the cause of his unusual hopping. Thankfully, the vets are confident he's not in serious pain, and we’ve started him on daily Metacam to help with the arthritis.

💊 And just look at him in the video – happily taking his medication like a champ! 💕

Buddy’s treatment cost £217.19. Can we raise that for him tonight? Every donation, no matter the size, helps us continue giving rabbits like Buddy the care they need in their golden years.

📌 Please donate if you can, and share this post to help spread the word.

🐴 HELP NEEDED – £2,000 Vet Bill 🐮
July has been incredibly tough at the sanctuary. After losing Barney at the start of the month, we've been hit with a wave of unexpected illnesses and injuries, on top of the usual routine treatments and ongoing medication costs.

Our vet bill has skyrocketed to over £2,000 — that’s double what we usually face. 😞

We’ll be sharing updates soon about some of the animals who’ve needed extra care recently, but right now we simply need help to get this bill cleared.

💸 Every single donation, no matter the size, is hugely appreciated. If you’re able to spare even a small amount, it will go directly towards clearing this bill and making sure our animals continue to get the care they deserve.

Please share if you can’t donate - spreading the word makes a huge difference too. 🙏
