The Power of the Sniff 🌿
For our dogs, sniffing isn’t just about catching a scent — it’s a whole experience. Every blade of grass, tree trunk, or woodland path carries layers of information. A single sniff can tell your dog who’s been there, what they were feeling, and even what they’d eaten.
✨ When dogs sniff, their brains light up with activity. This natural behaviour:
• Releases endorphins, helping them feel calm and content
• Works like a mindful practice, slowing them down and easing stress
• Keeps their minds sharp, giving them as much enrichment as a long run
But it doesn’t stop there. The earth itself holds benefits — soil is rich in natural microbes that support gut and immune health when dogs come into contact with it. And in the woods, some dogs instinctively self-select plants and berries such as hawthorn berries, traditionally linked with heart and circulatory support.
🌳 So next time you’re in the woods, let your dog linger. Those moments of stillness while they breathe in the world — and sometimes taste it — are deeply nourishing. For them, it’s mindfulness in its purest form.
