We just finished teaching hoof trimming on Lucky Penny's hooves. An observer jumped on to try it out on the way back to the paddock. I think there will be more riding with these two in the future.😏

This was sent to me by the family who adopted him. So many memories! Click to see the details.

I don't need to know what Punxsutawney Phil says, because the horses tell it first. Boo and Penny have been shedding already! True signs of spring coming, even though we may not be out of the woods yet. (I just heard there was a sightingsl of robins too.)

Snow on the horses back is an indicator that the horse is warm. Their winter coat is insulating them so well that the heat from their body does not melt the snow
Much like snow on a house roof, you know the house is well insulated when you see snow on the roof
When I see a horse with snow on their backs, I have to resist the temptation to brush off the snow it will make the horse cold. If I brush off the snow it crushes the hair causing it to loose its loft and insulating properties. Sending the dampness down to their skin.
As I showed in my last post, when the weather starts to melt the snow, the pattern of the horse’s guard hairs will cause the water from the melting snow to follow the guard hairs away from the body. The horse’s skin will stay dry.
