Cell Dogs

Cell Dogs Cell Dogs provides second chances for shelter dogs and incarcerated individuals. Each partner plays in important role in the success of our program.

Cells Dogs is making a difference in our local community by rescuing dogs, teaching marketable skills to those incarcerated and changing the lives of those individuals whom adopt our dogs giving them a loving home. Our Cell Dog training programs are community collaborative efforts between ourselves, local shelter and rescue groups and the participating correctional facility for both adults and ju

venile offenders. The Basic Obedience Training Program is a specialized opportunity which includes an intensive 4 week Lecture/Demo program for the incarcerated program participants, followed by an 8 to 10 week hands on training with the selected shelter dogs. Once the dogs have completed half of their prescribed training curriculum, we identify those who appear ideally suited for an Advanced Training Program. The dogs not selected for advanced training, celebrate their graduation by moving to their fur-ever homes with our pre-selected adopters. Those dogs identified for advanced training, begin a customized program to become service dogs for children afflicted with Autism Spectrum Disorder and for those with mobility disabilities. This program may take anywhere from 4 to 6 months with one of our contract trainers. Once the dog's training is complete, a 2 week team training is required for placement. Bhodi, Lola and Pretzel are making progress, and getting some love and care at OC Probation. Their adoption profiles are live on our website: https://www.celldogs.org/adopt-a-dog/.

Please share with your friends and family so we can start finding their forever homes. 🐾💕

When they are ready for adoption, in mid-August, they will know all their basic obedience commands, and will be house-trained. They're also working on their leash-walking skills and manners :).

🐾❤ Meet our newest trio! Lola, Bhodi and Pretzel started recently with our OC Probation program, and they're already making progress. 🐾❤

Lola, once comfortable in her new environment, is spunky but also likes to cuddle. Bhodi loves to run, play with toys and to go out on walks - he will be a great hiking buddy. Pretzel is happy to be active but also to be a lapdog - the best of both worlds!

These fun pups will soon be featured on our website for adoption. https://www.celldogs.org/adopt-a-dog/

🐾Another wonderful graduation in the books!❤

Chewy, Noodle and Sandy and their trainers showed their new skills to a large audience last week. The dogs have all found their forever homes, and the trainers all gained their college level continued education certificates. We are so proud!

As the trainers gain confidence, they often share feedback about the Cell Dogs program at graduation:

"Cell Dogs is an amazing program where we work with unique rescue dogs like Sandy, Noodles and Chewy. We help train them and rehabilitate them for adoption. Kind of like us, except for the adoption part, unless you want to take me home with you,... just joking :).

This program has been life-changing for me, as it's taught me patience and responsibility. It's giving me a chance to give back, to help in a way that I've never imagined doing. Don't tell the dogs but I think they help me more than I help them. They make me happy when I'm feeling down, they give me a sense of purpose and have helped me reflect on my own flaws, making me more determined to grow and become a better person.

This has been my 6th set of dogs, and I don't know if it gets easier or harder to say good-bye, but this group has been one of the best we've had, all 3 dogs so special in their own ways! Thanks for giving them a new home and adding them to your family!"

We often talk about the success of this program in terms of happy forever homes for our program pups.🐾🐾

We keep the information about our program trainers to the minimum out of respect for their privacy. With permission, we would like to share an inspiring "graduation speech" from one of our program trainers.

Research has shown education and workforce readiness are key to success, and provide a path to leaving a formerly incarcerated life behind. We love doing our part in contributing to this outcome. 💕🧑‍🎓👩‍🎓

❤🐾 SANDY is looking for her forever home!! 🐾❤

She is a very active, young (about 1-year old) female dog, approx. 40 pounds. She is a golden/shepherd mix, who is making great progress in her training and will be fully crate and potty trained by April, when she's set to graduate.

Sandy loves to play with other dogs and toys but loves a nice cuddle and belly rub, too. A real love bug.

Although she enjoys doggie play dates, she would probably do best as an only dog in the home, unless it’s an experienced handler who knows how to handle multiple dogs. Sandy is still learning how to share. She would do best with an active household.

Please share, or apply here: https://www.celldogs.org/dogs/sandy/

Our 🐾 service dog program 🐾 for veterans and first responders is on a roll. Last year, we've placed Tahoe with Joel. We recently checked in with them, and loved what we heard back:

“Everything is great, having the best life together. Tahoe just had his yearly physical, he is an 80-pound healthy baby boy. (…) We bought a new house, 5 minutes from the old one. He did great in the move, adatped well to the new house, and is happy because it is bigger. Just have to get used to walking the new routes. He still goes on runs with me 3 times weekly.”

This year, we are already busy training two great young dogs, Marty and Snickers. You can find out more about them on our website, under the "service dogs" tab.

🐾 Program update on Chewy, Noodles and Sandy 🐾

This is such a nice group of dogs, young and fun! This also means that they get overstimulated and overtired quickly. That's when they benefit from a little separation and alone time, so they can rest.

Otherwise, they are off to a great start, and here are some adorable pictures to document it.

Our Story

In 2007, we launched one of the nation’s first juvenile ward programs at the Heman G. Stark Youth Correctional Facility in Chino, CA. The program at OC Probation started in 2009 and was the first in Orange County, CA involving juvenile ward trainers. Our program at James A. Musick Facility has been active since 2013.

Our program dogs are rescues from local animal shelters. Once a group of dogs is selected, we bring them into incarceration facilities where designated trainers care for the dogs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Before teaming up with one of the dogs, program trainers first participate in four weeks of lecture classes. Then, over the next 8–10 weeks, they teach their canine students good manners and basic obedience. Upon successful completion, each dog is adopted into a loving home.

During classes, some dogs exhibit special aptitude, and these canines receive advanced training afterwards in order to become working service dogs.

We significantly impact local communities in a number of ways. Since its inception, Cell Dogs has successfully rescued, trained, and placed over 300 dogs into new homes. The program goes much further than simply reducing euthanasia rates and saving costs at local shelters: it transforms all program participants, providing them (and the dogs they train) with a valuable second chance at leading productive and responsible lives. Dog adoption is also made easier as people looking for a shelter pup are not always equipped to handle an untrained or unsocialized animal.
