Our founder, Kristy, just got engaged! 🥳💍🌈💜

If you know Kristy personally, you know that everything she does in her life is for the animals and the broader community.

So, instead of a typical engagement party, Kristy wants to turn a moment meant for her into an opportunity to fundraise to build a NEW BARN at the sanctuary!

This will be our biggest fundraiser yet — our goal is $20k!

Event Details:

Saturday, July 11th
6pm - 11pm
At Only Sunshine Sanctuary in Elverta

Come party with us and celebrate q***r love! 🌈 We are still finalizing details, but it’s gonna be a summer engagement party, so we’re thinking snacks, beverages, kiddie pools, animal cuddles (obviously), music, dancing, and sanctuary sunset vibes 🌅🤙🏽🪩👙🐑🥨

We NEED to talk about roosters

🐓 We have a huge rooster problem in Sacramento County, and animal sanctuaries, including us, are struggling to keep up.

🐣 Many people buy chicks with the intention of having egg-laying hens. The problem is, it’s practically impossible to know the s*x of a chick until they are a certain age. Ultimately, about half will grow up to be roosters. Roosters are not allowed within Sacramento City limits, and they’re only allowed in certain agricultural zones within Sacramento County. Thus, roosters are constantly being dumped or rehomed throughout the region.

🧑‍⚖️ On top of our already existing rooster problems, Sacramento County is currently proposing changing the number of roosters residents are allowed to keep on their property.

🐓 As it is currently in the county, there are no restrictions on how many roosters you can have if your property is 10,000sq ft or more, with the exception of some residential districts.

🐓 The new proposal would only allow for 1 rooster per every 14,500 sq ft of property. Additionally, residents in residential districts would be limited to 2 roosters max.

🧑‍⚖️ The reason for this proposal is because of numerous complaints of rooster noise and cockfighting within neighborhoods. While we know the intention is good, we also know that this new rule will most likely lead to the dumping of even MORE roosters, which is already a huge problem in Sacramento County. Not to mention, people that have roosters for cockfighting are already breaking the law, so this change is unlikely to deter them anyways.

🌱 As said by : “Instead of creating laws that increase abandonment of unwanted roosters, why not strengthen regulations and enforcement around animal welfare, housing conditions, and neglect?”

📧 Email Sacramento County Supervisors and respectfully ask them to reconsider this ordinance.
[email protected]
Tell them:
* You oppose increased rooster abandonment
* You support animal welfare
* You want solutions that target cruelty directly

Let’s love and care for our rooster community members better ♥️🐓

Hot days call for 🍉watermelon🍉

Watermelon is, in the animals’ opinions, *essential* during these hot California days 🥵

Now, we all know their health doesn’t ACTUALLY depend on watermelon, but it definitely helps! It’s a natural, yummy way to make sure they’re hydrated and full of electrolytes.

What is it they say about a watermelon a day…?

Introducing Only Sunshine: A weekly blog about Only Sunshine Sanctuary!

We know how much hearing stories about our animal rescues and other sanctuary happenings means to our supporters. Now, you can get more in-depth stories, every week!

Every Friday we will be posting a new blog to our website. Of course, we’re gonna talk about animals and the sanctuary, but we’re also gonna talk about community outreach, vegan living, and so much more! Yesterday’s blog by volunteer Roxy teaches you how to turn your own pet into a coloring book page 😍

Update on Sunday’s Bunny Adoption Event:

While we didn’t have anyone put in any adoption applications, we had a few really awesome moments:

🐇 A second grader (pictured in slides 1-2) was really happy to get to sit and hang out with Barney while her mom gave their rescue dog a bath. She told volunteer Olivia all about how she wants to have her own sanctuary someday. She was incredibly smart and kind, and knew SO much about SO many different animals! She’s going to make a great sanctuary director someday 🥰

🐇 A middle-aged woman came in to say hello to Calistoga (not pictured). Calistoga is a red-eyed-white lionhead. The woman said she had only ever seen red-eyed bunnies portrayed in a scary way, like Bunicula. After Calistoga showed her his adorable self and let her pet him for a while, she said her life was genuinely changed — she had no idea how amazing rabbits were! She also said something else that really stuck with us: once you become an adult, you don’t get to do many things “for the first time.” You don’t have many new things to learn about. She was so happy that Calistoga came into her life and gave her something new to learn! It was one of the sweetest interactions we’ve ever had🥹

🐇 Barney has a fan club! Two of our new bunny-loving friends (pictured in slides 3-4) came out JUST to meet him 🥹🥹 They have 4 bunnies of their own with no intention of adoption another. They just really wanted to meet Barney🥹🥹😂😂

Even when nobunny gets adopted, we still really love adoption events for the community outreach we are able to do🤍
