Spores inhaled from soil, pigeon droppings, decaying wood
Most common systemic fungal infection in cats

Signs to watch:
Nasal form: Chronic sneezing, nasal discharge with blood, firm bump on bridge of nose
Skin form: Non-healing bumps / nodules on skin
Eye / Brain form: Eye redness / blindness, head tilt, circling, seizures, behavior change

Diagnosis:
Blood test - antigen test
Cytology / biopsy of nasal tissue or nodules

Treatment:

Cat Asthma vs Hairball 🤧 vs 🤢
They look similar but they’re very different

Cat Asthma:
Sounds like: Wheezing, coughing, gagging + open-mouth breathing
Posture: Crouched low, neck stretched out, elbows out
Frequency: Can happen anytime, often in episodes
Other signs: Fast breathing, lethargy, blue gums in severe cases
Cause: Airway inflammation + allergies
Treatment: Vet meds - inhalers, steroids, bronchodilators

Cat Hairball:
Sounds like: Hacking, retching, then vomiting up fur
Posture: Standing, head down, focused on vomiting
Frequency: Usually after grooming, 1-2x per month max
Other signs: Normal breathing, eats/plays fine after
Cause: Swallowed fur during grooming
Treatment: More brushing, hairball diet/gel, fiber

Key difference:
Asthma = breathing problem. Hairball = stomach problem.

Go to vet NOW if: open-mouth breathing, blue gums, collapse, or coughing that won’t stop

If you’re not sure, record a video for your vet. It helps a ton ❤️

Idiopathic Vestibular Disease in Dogs 🐶🌀
Also called "Old Dog Vestibular Disease"

What is it?
Sudden loss of balance + coordination
Looks like a stroke but it’s not
Affects the inner ear/brain balance system
Usually hits older dogs out of nowhere

How it’s caused:
Idiopathic = cause is unknown
Most common in senior dogs 8+ years old
Not from an ear infection, tumor, or toxin
Can also happen in younger dogs rarely

Common symptoms:
Head tilt to one side
Circling or falling over
Nystagmus - eyes flicking side to side
Nausea/vomiting + trouble walking
Stumbling like they’re drunk

Typical treatments:
Supportive care - anti-nausea meds + IV fluids
Medications for dizziness and vomiting
Assistance walking + non-slip surfaces at home
Rest in a quiet, safe space
Vet monitoring to rule out other causes

Prognosis:
Most dogs improve a lot in 3-7 days and recover in 2-3 weeks. Some keep a mild head tilt.

Go to vet NOW if: sudden symptoms to rule out stroke, ear infection, or toxin

Scary to see but most dogs bounce back ❤️

What happens if your dog is NOT neutered? 🐶

Behavior changes:
More roaming - they’ll try to escape to find a mate
Marking + aggression - peeing to claim territory, more dominance with other males
Hu***ng + restlessness - especially around females in heat

Health risks:
Higher risk of testicular cancer + prostate issues
More injuries/fights from escaping or defending territory
Stress during mating season

Other stuff:
Unplanned litters if they get to a female in heat
Can be harder to train/focus when hormones are high

Neutering isn’t for every dog, but it does change behavior + health. Talk to your vet about what’s best for your pup ❤️

Urticaria in Dogs = Dog Hives 🐶
Itchy, puffy bumps that show up fast

What is it?
An allergic skin reaction where blood vessels leak fluid under the skin
Can be sudden acute or keep coming back chronic

How to recognize it:
Raised, round welts - feels like little bumps under the fur
Itching, scratching, licking a lot
Swollen face, muzzle, ears, or around eyes
Red skin + hair loss in spots from scratching
Hives can move and appear/disappear in minutes

Common causes:
Allergies: food, bug bites/stings, pollen, dust
Meds or vaccines reaction
Shampoos, cleaning products, plants
Stress, heat, or infection
Sometimes the exact cause isn’t found

Typical treatments:
Vet-prescribed antihistamines to reduce itching + swelling
Steroids for severe cases
Remove the trigger if you know what it is
Cool compress + oatmeal bath for relief
Emergency vet if there’s trouble breathing, facial swelling, or vomiting

Go to the vet NOW if: swelling of throat/tongue, trouble breathing, collapse, or hives + vomiting

Hives look scary but are usually treatable. If you see them, call your vet to rule out a serious reaction ❤️
