Rockette, our mare with navicular and multiple arthritis diagnoses, has shown significant improvement after adopting a healthy trimming regimen and ditching shoes. Although the navicular changes in the navicular bone are irreversible, she has not exhibited lameness since the change. Prior to this, she received injections, but has not required them in the past year. The only remaining visible issues are the added bone from pulling tendons in the front right hoof and a significantly larger shoulder on the left. This asymmetry developed as a result of her altered gait, which placed additional weight on her left side due to pain in the right hoof caused by an incorrectly shaped hoof. Navicular issues can arise when a foal's hooves are not allowed to expand properly, inadequate turnout on harder footing, or incorrect trimming and shoeing practices. When hooves are confined to a too-narrow shape, the hoof mechanism is compromised, leading to arterial blood accumulation in the leg, erosion of the navicular bone, and the eventual appearance of navicular on X-rays. Fortunately, if addressed early and properly, many navicular patients can lead normal, pain-free lives. Rockette now has a saddle that accommodates her unique shoulder shape, ensuring her comfort.

Our former hoof patient, Bella, is still on a four-week schedule and is doing wonderfully at home. She no longer has abscesses because her hooves are now in the correct anatomical shape. Our intervals are short enough to prevent pressure points that can later lead to abscesses or toe-first landing.

This horse came for training but needed hoof rehab right away. Getting light under saddle isn't possible with uncomfortable hooves. She ended up staying as a long-term boarder. The first picture of the horse is after training started; the others show her development. She's much more comfortable in her skin and also likes to get ridden now. She used to fight her rider a lot when she physically couldn't do things the way they were requested. Now she has built up a lot of strength and self-confidence, making her a partner that wants to work with her person. It’s an exciting new level of communication for horse and owner without force.

Ty’s development in almost one year:

Top pic is 5 months under saddle in mostly walk, with side movements, flexions and mobilization. Under saddle 2-3 times a week for 10-20 min, rest of week groundwork.

Middle pic, still only ground work with flexions, corners and mobilization.

Lowest pic, after arrival from race track. In let down time!
