I’ve made a lot of tags in 12 years.
There have been some favorite names on those tags: Blue Dog, Wishful, Toast, Potato, Keeper, Maybe, Tank, Jubilee, Juice, Paloma, Hickory, Angus, Auggie, Pa**ie, Podge.

There have been some favorite customers too. Mostly that’s all I’ve had. People who love their dog so much they can’t imagine waking up to a day without them. I’ve cried with customers, I’ve gotten invitations to exotic places, handwritten thank you cards, and boxes of cookies. I’ve heard the funniest, the saddest, the most heartwarming dog stories you can imagine.

Through it all there’s been a dog lying there on the floor of my shop, while I engrave Saturday mornings. I started this business with the wisest German Shepard ever, Yuba. Then came the indefatigable Shepard Oso, and now whining at my feet, begging me to stop engraving and go play ball is my little Jewelbox Shepard, Coda.

So Coda has convinced me to do just that. Take a break. Go for more walks, throw more balls, and rejuvenate my state of mind. A walkabout, as it were. I think Bella Tocca Tags might return via Etsy, come fall. Meanwhile, I thank all my customers for ordering tags, and more tags, for being good-natured and patient when I mess up, and most of all for being so devoted to their dogs.

The "dog of valor" awards are tags made by, you guessed it, Bella Tocca tags. We think this is good work in the world, especially since this particular situation inspired a safe haven for animal victims of domestic violence, only the second in the country. Hank is the Great Dane pictured wearing his valorous tag.

Thanks to one dog’s heroism and a community’s outpouring of support, victims fleeing violent homes no longer have to choose between seeking safety for themselves or protecting their pets. Joe Maxwell, former Lieutenant Governor of Missouri and The HSUS’s Director...

It's really important to walk a dog every day. Not just because all of us benefit from the exercise, but because the parameters of the long-term relationship you're building with your dog need to be regularly reinforced. "Oh, you want to turn left at this corner?" says your dog. "Okay! I forgot you were in charge. Fine, we'll turn left, no problem. See? Here we go. Left."
