Almost every day I hear someone say “I reached out to my local shelter/rescue for help with a kitten, and no one responded because no one there actually cares.” Friends, this attitude has to change. Let’s talk about it!

I understand how frustrating it is to discover the difficulties of finding resources for kittens. Trust me, I get it—110%. That said, we need to speak more kindly about our local rescuers and groups, and to become both empathetic and empowered to be part of the solution.

The truth is that for many shelters and rescues, the simple administrative burden of even responding to endless requests during kitten season can be overwhelming and impossible as they try to do the most they can with the resources they have. But this does not mean they do not care. On the contrary, those already in the trenches often care too much and take on too much...that’s why they may not have time to respond to every inquiry!

Animal welfare workers experience a high incidence of anxiety and depression, particularly during kitten season, because there is an unfair expectation that they have to do it all. It really is true: the more you do, the more you’re asked to do. And the more you’re asked to do, the more you feel like no matter how much you do, you’ll always be falling short. We shouldn’t reinforce those ideas—we should dismantle them.

Shelters and rescues are doing the most they can with the resources they have, and if they aren’t doing more, it’s because they need more people power! That means the frustration you feel with your local resources can be an incredible catalyst for personal empowerment and action. While it’s easier to point a finger, it’s much more effective to lend a hand. And when we all lend a hand, we find that we can have such a greater impact when we all work together. ♥️

Every kitten deserves a family, and this sweet girl is no exception!

Our beautiful Coral has spent months waiting for someone to choose her. While most kittens have settled into their forever homes, already cozied up in their person’s lap, she’s still in rescue. And while being raised in a foster home is the best these rescue babies can hope for, it is not meant to be a long term or permanent solution for them. Coral needs a family of her own that says “we are your family” and “this is your home” and “we will love you forever”!

Coral may be shy at first, but behind that gentle shell is a loving little soul that wants nothing more than to trust! The moment she realizes she’s safe, she blossoms into a playful little purr machine! Her little motor is so loud and steady and will start up the second she sees you! She loves chasing toys and enjoys kitten fun and games! She adores other kitties and would thrive with a feline friend in the home who can show her the ropes! What Coral needs most is a person who will dedicate time to her and allow her to settle in at her own pace so that she can transform into the affectionate companion she’s meant to be 💕

Haven deserves a safe haven of her very own 😩

Haven’s life before rescue was not the life any cat should have. She lived on the streets in survival mode. Having litter after litter after litter. She was the best momma! She protected her babies from predators, kept them warm in the cold months, kept them fed even when she had nothing to eat herself. She has lived her life tired, hungry, and with nowhere safe to rest her head.

Now, for the first time, Haven IS safe! She no longer has to search for food or hide her babies from danger. Her work as a mama is done and she’s ready for someone to take care of HER! She’s really just a baby herself after all!

Haven is a young, sweet, and gentle soul. She’s calm and laid back, the kind of cat who will happily curl up next to you on the couch for a long nap. She loves watching birds out the window, enjoys quiet company, and gets along well with other cats.

After all she’s been through, Haven deserves a home where she will never again have to worry! She deserves a person who will love her with the same devotion she’s given all her life!

Scrabble
3 month old tortoiseshell female

Scrabble is quite possibly the softest and sweetest kitten you will ever meet! She’s very friendly, following you around and rubbing against your legs, meowing sweetly. Her two siblings got adopted and she needs a home of her own! She recently changed foster homes and adapted quickly to her new temporary home, finding her place amongst the other cats and the humans. She enjoys napping in your lap or sleeping at the top of a cat tree.

Sad update:

Sweet Jewels passed away today. She was on her favorite blanket and her foster mom was with her. She was only with us about four months, but we know she had plenty of peace and comfort in her final months.

We know she’s running free in kitty heaven now. No more pain and no more daily meds! We love you sweet girl.

(Jewels was a sweet old lady that we pulled from Caddo animal control. She had a couple chronic health conditions, including hyperthyroid and kidney disease. We are unsure for exact age, but it was definitely double digits.)

Kevin

4 month old neutered tabby boy

Kevin is a sweet kitten with a short little tail. He was found in a parking lot all by himself and just walked up, purring and friendly. He’s energetic and super playful, so he needs a friend to play with. He’s used to other cats and would probably even enjoy a dog friend. If you’re looking for a kitten who can be both entertaining and a snuggle buddy, then Kevin is for you!

We have another kitten, Scrabble, who would be a great playmate for Kevin!

Majority of female cats at the clinic were pregnant, including Goldie. Everyone was spayed 🙌 Lets say those numbers were, 20 preggo cats. With average of five kittens per a litter. That is 100 kittens not entering the community, filling up shelters/rescues or suffering/dying outside.

While spaying pregnant cats is sad... there are worse things.

For example, last night a family told me about how their feral barn-cat had kittens. Mom rejected the kittens. The kittens were found wrapped in their umbilical cords so tightly, a ball of kittens, their tiny legs and extremities had no blood supply. Every kitten died over the next few days, with their legs and tails falling off. No one survived 😭

Stories about suffering are common in rural Lewis-county. These days, I am used to stories like, "The raccoons ate the babies." "Coyote snatched them" "The kittens were hit by a car." "Kittens got stuck in the truck engine." "Neighbor poisoned them" "Momcat ate them all"

Do you know who reads those messages every week? Rescuers do..... And let me tell you, the messages are far more ugly, graphic and terrible you can imagine. Often, paired with some sort of emergency.

The reality is that many outdoor kittens die within the first year of life. Health issues, environmental hazards, genetics, predators, vehicles, humans, there are many reasons kittens die. Even kittens born indoors, with the best care, sometimes do not survive.

Know what bothers me more than spaying a pregnant cat? Watching cats/kittens suffer outdoors with no one to help them - And being unable to help, because the rescues are full (beyond full) and knowing that this cycle of suffering will continue, unless people are willing to help rescues make a difference.

We are in the overpopulation crisis. This will always be a difficult topic. It is a necessary topic. Please spay your cat. Preferably before she is pregnant. ❤️🙌

Most people will scroll right past Breeze without a second thought unknowingly missing out on one of the most affectionate and playful little companions! He may look ordinary but he is anything but!

Breeze is a total goofball! He loves to zoom, leap, climb……and lick feet 🤔 No, not bite. Lick! Breeze has an unusual obsession with keeping your feet very clean 🤷‍♀️😂

He is also very loving with both people and other cats! He really is a one of a kind best friend!

Catan (white/gray) is the extrovert of the group. She is full speed ahead, loves people, and is a super hunter of anything that moves. She’s enthusiastically interested in just about everything. She’s the jock…the bravest…most definitely a Gryffindor! She is very social and would love to live with another cat, and probably even a dog.

Adoption fee $75 for one, $100 for two. Kittens are negative for FIV/FeLV, microchipped, and vaccinated.

The board game kittens! Mama Maria ignored all the soft, cozy places and gave birth on a bookshelf of board games. Meet Catan, Scrabble, and Battleship!

Battleship (gray swirled tabby) loves people and seeks them out to play. Battleship was named as a little, gray newborn, but he has grown to fit into his name. He’s a big guy! He’s round and cuddly and will probably grow into a very big cat. He’s very easy-going and has extremely soft fur, making him exceptionally huggable.

Adoption fee is $75 for one kitten, $100 for two. Kittens are CIV/FeLV negative, microchipped, and vaccinated.
