COURTESY POST -
Gus is searching for a new home and his owners have given the following details about him:
Gus is a 10mos old Saint Bernard Anatolian Shepherd mix. We adopted him when he was 2 mos old from the local animal shelter. He has been on a puppy wellness plan with Wellhaven since we got him. He’s done puppy training and has been good at picking up things with the proper motivation. He always wants to be where his people are and will lay at your feet or nuzzle you for pets. He is mostly house and crate trained as long as you keep a schedule and recently has been indicating when he has to go out. Accidents are fairly rare. He loves to fetch and play with his family. With other dogs he’s very interested but a bit timid if they are bigger than him. With really small dogs he lays down and plays at their level and is gentle. He loves to run and dig in the yard and is very curious. He is very excited when he sees people and other than jumping up on them to get their attention he has not shown any aggression toward people in the open. When we take him out off leash he will explore but stay within sight of you at all times usually no more than 20 feet away and does come to call. One quirk of his is that he tries to herd the family and animals which can be annoying at times depending on if you see him or not before you trip on him.
Now on to the reason we are having to give him up. We’ve been working with him since he was a puppy on resource guarding. We have worked on it with his kibble, ears, and feet being touched all of which we can now do without issue. We’ve gotten from no one can be near while eating his kibble to being able to fully touch, pet, and take his dish away without any issues and give him treats from the hand without biting, however with very high value treats and in this case a new toy it’s still an issue after he has them and will need to be continued to be addressed. Because of this he should not be around little kids who do not understand not to touch these things while he’s using them. My youngest with developmental disabilities was bitten due to not understanding this. As such we need to re-home him as he’s not a good fit for my household. Another issue is nail trimming and has to be done at the groomers as he will not allow us to do it and is too big for us to wrestle to get it done.
He is well loved here and I am disheartened to have to re-home him but I cannot have my youngest around him as she does not understand why she can’t “play” with the puppy.
I believe he would be a great addition to anyone without small kids and would really excel on a larger yard (we have ¼ acre in the suburbs). He has cohabitated with a cat without issue but she is very old and doesn’t come out often so his exposure has been pretty minimal.
I can be reached via text message at 763-258-6176 or email [email protected]. We are located in Minnesota in a northern suburb of the Twin Cities.
