Today is world su***de prevention day.
What does this have to do with an animal hospital you might ask?
Did you know that in Australia a veterinary professional takes their life every 12 weeks?
Their are a number of factors contributing to this heart breaking statistic, including compassion fatigue, dealing with frequent euthanasia's and emotional blackmail.
Every member of our team comes to work every day because they are an empathetic animal lover, who has dedicated their lives to saving those of your pets. Not for the money, but because they truly care.
Unfortunately it is not all puppy cuddles and smiles. The truth is that we face life and death decisions daily, we experience the heart-breaking goodbyes alongside each of our clients, we fight by our patients sides to keep them alive, and sometimes that is simply not enough.
In the past 24 hours alone our team has performed 12 euthanasia's of people’s beloved pets. Pets we have built relationships and bonds with. Clients who we see as family. We have to be there through one of the worst days of their lives, and then we walk into the next appointment with a smile on our face and carry on.
That doesn’t mean we don’t have a cry on the drive home, that we don’t lay awake at night thinking of the patient we lost that day, wishing we could have done more.
What you don’t see behind the scenes are the tears we shed when we lose a patient we’ve been caring for in the ICU, the nights we come in at midnight after a 10 hour shift to check on a patient because we can't sleep worrying about them, when we sit with our elderly client and listen through them telling us their pet is all they have left before we then have to send them to heaven, or when we have to help someone explain to their child that their fur baby isn’t going to get better and come home.
Veterinary professionals are some of the kindest, most empathetic, hard-working people you will find, our team is full of them and we’re so proud of how much they care for our patients and clients, but we know this can take a toll.
Please don’t let one of our beautiful staff, or any veterinary professional, become a statistic.
We’re only human.
Please be kind.
Please be patient.
We’re doing our best 💗
