🎉🐶 Show us your mutts! 🐶🎉

It's National Mutt Day, so we’re celebrating the lovable, unpredictable, and totally one-of-a-kind mixed-breed dogs that keep us laughing, guessing — and always feeling loved.

Whether your pup is part shepherd, part couch potato, or part who-knows-what, we want to see them in all their glory!

📸 Drop a photo in the comments and tell us their name, their suspected breed mix, and their funniest quirk.

We’re kicking things off with Gibson — a CCVS patient who we strongly suspect is part bully, boxer, lab… and 100% goober. 🐾

Mixed-breed dogs often have fewer health issues, longer lifespans, and the kind of personality you can’t find in a breed guide.

Beach days are back for Mookie! 🐰💙🌊

Mookie came to see our Zoo & Exotics team for his annual wellness exam — but we’ve known him for a few years now, ever since he was referred to us for a mass behind his eye. After a CT scan and surgery, our team made a surprising discovery: the “mass” was actually a tapeworm cyst. 😳

Thankfully, Mookie made a full recovery and has been living his best life ever since — including soaking up some seaside sunshine. We’re so glad to see him thriving and hopping along like nothing ever happened!

Curious about the services our Zoo & Exotics team offers — or the types of species we care for? Visit capecodvetspecialists.com/zoological-exotic-medicine-buzzards-bay-ma or email [email protected] to learn more!

This little peach 🍑 is a 1-year-old Pomeranian named Peach! She came to CCVS after a few days of vomiting and diarrhea at home. Her mom became concerned when she noticed some blood, a lack of appetite, and Peach seeming unusually lethargic.

Peach was admitted for overnight care at CCVS, where she received close monitoring from her doctor and nursing team. Her stay included an ultrasound to rule out an obstruction and bloodwork to check for any underlying issues. In cases like Peach’s—where symptoms might not seem alarming at first—hospitalization can still be critical, especially for small dogs. Breeds like Pomeranians are more prone to rapid dehydration, which can lead to hypovolemic shock, a life-threatening condition where the heart can’t pump enough blood due to fluid or blood loss.

With supportive care and fluid therapy, Peach perked up and regained her appetite by the next morning. She was cleared to head home and has been back to her spunky self ever since—chasing her beloved ping pong ball around the house. Life is once again a peach for Miss Peach! 😉🐶🍑

Your Pet-Safe 4th of July Checklist Starts Here 🇺🇸🐾

The 4th of July is one of the top days for lost pets and emergency vet visits. Help keep your pets safe with these proactive tips:

✅ Before the festivities:
- Make sure pets have ID tags & up-to-date microchip info
- Take a current photo of your pet, just in case
- Double-check that your yard or fences are secure
- Have an anxious pet? Refill any calming medications now — don’t wait until last minute
- Prep for hot weather — provide shade and water if your pet will be outside

✅ During the celebrations:
- Keep pets safely indoors, preferably in a quiet, escape-proof space
- Keep them away from sparklers, glow sticks, grills, and BBQ skewers
- No table scraps! Many holiday foods are toxic or harmful to pets
- Never leave pets in the car — even briefly
- Leave them home — fireworks shows are no place for pets

📍 And remember — if an emergency does happen, we are here if you need us:
• CCVS-Buzzards Bay: Open 24/7 for emergencies
• CCVS-Dennis: Friday 2pm through Monday 10pm (24 hrs), & Tues–Thurs 2pm–10pm.

Plan ahead, stay safe, and give your pets a stress-free 4th!

🚨🔥 HEAT WAVE ALERT: Keep Pets Safe from Extreme Heat! 🔥🚨
With temps soaring, it’s crucial to protect your pets from the dangers of excessive heat.

- Never leave pets in a parked car — even for a minute
- Keep them hydrated with plenty of fresh, cool water
- Limit outdoor time to early mornings or evenings
- Paw check! Asphalt and sand can burn paws — test with your hand
- Watch for signs of heatstroke: heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, or weakness

If your pet shows signs of heatstroke, seek emergency care immediately.

🏥 CCVS-Buzzards Bay is open 24/7 for emergencies
🏥 CCVS-Dennis is open: Fri 2pm – Mon 10pm (24/7) & Tues–Thurs 2pm–10pm.

Meet Oatmeal! 🐰💙

This adorable guy came to see our Zoo & Exotics team for a neuter—and he did great! Here he is post-op, looking extra cute (and a little sleepy 🥹).

Our board-certified specialist in zoological medicine, Dr. Kyra Berg, led his care alongside our exceptional, credentialed exotics team to ensure Oatmeal received safe, high-quality, and compassionate treatment every step of the way. 🩺✨

Neutering rabbits is an important part of responsible pet ownership—it helps prevent unwanted litters, reduces hormonal behaviors, and can lower the risk of certain health issues like testicular cancer and torsion. At CCVS, we’re proud to offer expert collaborative care for exotic pets like Oatmeal.

Have a bunny or another exotic animal in need of specialized care? We’re here when you need us. Feel free to reach out to our Zoo/Exotics Team at [email protected] 💛

Meet Cash! 🐶🐾❤️‍🩹

This cutie is a 6-month-old Labrador Retriever that was diagnosed with congenital heart disease and congestive heart failure. Cash has been under the care of Dr. Quinn (CCVS Cardiologist) and the Cardiology team — and we’re thrilled to share that he’s doing great on his medications!

During his recent recheck, Cash received an echocardiogram (a special ultrasound of the heart) and an ECG to monitor his heart’s electrical activity. With those soulful eyes and a wagging tail, he charmed the entire team! 🩺📸

We're so proud of Cash’s progress and honored to be part of his journey. 💛

When chronic ear infections and environmental allergies make life uncomfortable, it takes a team to find the least invasive path forward. 🐾

That was the case for Mitchum, a 6.5-year-old Cocker Spaniel, who recently visited our dermatology team for advanced ear care. Like many Spaniel breeds, Mitchum had been dealing with stubborn ear issues for years.

To help avoid a more invasive procedure called a bilateral TECA (Total Ear Canal Ablation), our team performed a CT scan to get a better look at what was going on inside his ears. Thankfully, there were no signs of a middle ear infection (otitis media), but the scan did reveal non-cancerous growths and inflammation consistent with an external ear infection.

Thanks to Dr. Emery (our Dermatologist), and a little help from the CO₂ laser, they were able to remove the growths, culture the infection, biopsy the growths, and give his ear canals a deep clean. This approach preserved his ear structure and helped prevent more extensive surgery down the line.

Mitchum’s also been under the care of Dr. Carvalho (Internist) for pancreatitis and is doing great on his prescription diet. With that behind him, he’s now ready to recover from this ear procedure with just 4 weeks of healing and topical steroids for long-term management.

💡 Signs your pet may be dealing with ear infections:
- Frequent head shaking
- Excessive itching
- Odor from the ears
- Discharge or buildup

We’re happy to be part of Mitchum’s journey and to help him feel his best again—one ear at a time!
