Humane Society of Lebanon County Our Vision Statement

“A humane community that understands and values the ways in which animals enrich our lives.”

The Humane Society of Lebanon County is a nonprofit organization. We rely on contributions from the general public and businesses to help cover operating, medical care and feeding expenses. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated. We are a member of the Federated Humane Societies Of Pennsylvania. As the only animal welfare organization within Lebanon County we maintain a modern, sanitary

animal shelter that contains dog kennels, cat housing, a small animal room, emergency kennels to receive strays from the police during off duty hours of shelter operation, a dispensary equipped with medical equipment and supplies, a puppy room, a maternity room, plus our office and reception area.

- We receive stray animals from most municipalities within Lebanon County, as well as those surrendered by individual residents of the county who cannot or will not take proper care of their pets.

- We provide shelter, food, and medical treatment for homeless, unwanted, and neglected creatures, and do all we can to ensure their placement into new and good homes.

- We keep accurate and current records of all surrenders and adoptions, and report them to the Pennsylvania Dog Enforcement Bureau. We hold all animals in "Bite Cases" for the police until they are determined to be safe or otherwise.

- We provide emergency services for stray animals and arrange for medical care and treatment when indicated.

The ARL has received results for a positive rabies case from the Wyomissing Borough near Hill Avenue. The positive case, an injured brown tabby and white kitten, was brought into the Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) on Saturday, July 26, 2025, after being found by a resident.

Our staff is currently working with the Wyomissing Borough and the Pennsylvania Department of Health assessing the exposure to all individuals involved.

As a precaution, residents should be alert for other animals in the area with signs of illness and should not allow their pets outside unsupervised. If you suspect that you have been in contact with an animal infected with rabies, please seek immediate medical attention and follow protocol to contact the Department of Health as advised by medical professionals. If you suspect that an animal is infected with rabies, please contact the animal control provider of your municipality or your local police department and do not approach the animal by any means.

Common symptoms of rabies in animals as listed by the CDC include general sickness, problems swallowing, excessive drool or saliva, an animal who bites at everything, an animal who appears tamer than you would expect, an animal who is having trouble moving or maybe paralyzed, or a bat that is on the ground.

According to the CDC, rabies is a neurological virus that infects the central nervous system of mammals, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death in 99.9% of human cases if left untreated. Although 90% of reported cases of rabies in animals occur in wildlife–mainly skunks, raccoons, bats, coyotes, and foxes–the virus can be transmitted to dogs, cats, and cattle who have not received a vaccination.
(Source: CDC)

For any pet owners, ensuring pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations, which is legally required, and keeping them away from unfamiliar animals, especially wildlife, is the most effective way to keep pets safe.
