When you adopt a dog,
that dog needs to decompress from the weight of the mental and often physical chains of their past life.

I assure you the mental scars weigh the most.

Please do not expect your new pup to run to you with enthusiasm making eye contact when you call a name they only learned upon intake between kennel walls.

Often they are so shut down that freedom for them is still an unknown, uncharted stress.
As they crave rest they first search for trust within you,
and that ‘you’ must earn.

Humans always want to rush everything.

They want obedience without loyalty, devotion without a bond, respect without earning it,
but the animal no matter how bruised always sees through the human heart and intention.

For them, solitude under a table or the end of a hall alone is a welcome retreat.
If you want to reach them,
love them from a distance and let them be.

Every day is a new day farther from their past, closer to their forever.

But please don’t take them back to the shelter or leave them to the unknown just to restart the cycle all over again because they don’t hold up to your unrealistic expectation,
unreasonable timeline or the memory of a dog you hold so dear in your heart.
That is not their burden to meet.

Ask yourself,
are you the person you promised them to be the day you looked into their eyes and said you were taking them home?

‘Home’ is where we find ourselves among those who accept the most vulnerable, imperfect parts of us.

It is a journey we walk together.
It is not always easy, sometimes it is ugly, but if I had to describe the journey in it’s entirety I would say it is beautiful. Remarkable really.

We cry more than we laugh and on the days the sun shines through,
let those be the greatest reminders of all,
that one more day is behind us and forever is bright ahead.⛅️

⚠️ UPDATE - VESUC HAS BEEN LOCATED SAFELY AND RETURNED TO HIS HANDLER. THANK YOU TO THE COMMUNITY FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE.

DIXON POLICE DEPARTMENT SEEKS PUBLIC’S HELP LOCATING MISSING K-9

The Dixon Police Department is requesting the public’s urgent assistance in locating our missing K-9, Vesuc. Vesuc, a German Shepherd, was last seen around 1:00 a.m. in the area of West Graham Street in Dixon. He is 80 pounds and was wearing a black collar.

An image of Vesuc is included with this release. If you see him, please call 911 immediately. We strongly urge members of the public not to approach Vesuc, as he may be startled or disoriented while separated from his handler.

Police Chief Ryan Bivins issued the following statement:

“K-9 Vesuc is not just a highly trained police service dog, he’s a beloved member of our department and our community. Our officers are working around the clock to bring him home safely, and we’re asking for the public’s help in this effort. We are deeply grateful for your support.”

The Dixon Police Department has launched a full-scale search and is actively pursuing all leads. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Anyone with information or sightings of Vesuc is urged to call 911 immediately.N
