Billy Walks

Billy Walks Billy Walks is a dog walking and pet sitting service based in South Manchester Billy Walks is owned and run by me, Billy (now there’s a surprise!).

Billy Walks is a dog walking and pet sitting service based in South Manchester, roughly covering Hulme, Whalley Range, Chorlton, Didsbury. Having spent much of my life around animals, mainly dogs (and horses in my younger years), the opportunity arose a few years ago to swap by office job for a career in dog walking and pet sitting. This really was, and still is, a dream come true! That “Monday fe

eling”? I’ve never had it as a dog walker, as Mondays mean the start of a new week of going out and having fun with my four-legged friends! The name of the service came about when a client commented that their dog “always looked forward to his Billy Walks”. Billy Walks are fun and varied; would you like to walk the same route and do the same thing every day? Although time and distance wise we are limited to walk locations in the South Manchester area, dogs are walked as much as possible in different locations, be it Turn Moss, Chorlton meadows or Chorlton Water Park. And within that area there are lots of different routes to take as well. I’ve been walking dogs in the area for almost 12 years now and I still discover new little paths! Having a background in agility and obedience training, I use my skills to bring something extra to the walks as well, by using fallen trees and park benches as agility equipment and places where yummy treats hide. This kind of “training” is not about imposing a strict regime with a goal to drill your dog into becoming an agility or obedience star; it’s all about having fun! Most dogs love trying new things and figuring out what they have to do to get a treat, and besides physical exercise they’ll also exercise their brains during their walk. Of course there are dogs who are not interested and just want a quiet mooch, and that is fine too. And for some dogs a walk isn’t a walk if it doesn’t include chasing a ball, so balls and other toys come out on most walks, although I do try and get them interested in other activities too. Billy Walks is now fully booked, but an announcement will be made on this page if any spaces become available - so please keep checking if you’re interested!

More, very important info that you'll hopefully never need!

🐕HEATSTROKE IN DOGS🐕

We've been banging on about this for years! HEATSTROKE is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY! Fortunately, now more and more professionals are communicating the same message!

Whilst the need for rapid cooling with COLD water (1-15°C) has been recognised for decades in equestrian and human medicine, the dog world has lagged behind, and very poor information still circulates. e.g. "cool the paws", "cover with wet towels", "avoid cold water as it will cause shock"

THE KEY MESSAGES ARE............

💦"WET THEN VET"💦

💦"COLD WATER IMMERSION" (1-15°C)💦
(If you can't immerse, keep pouring ANYTHING COLD over the dog - hose, soft drinks, milk, etc)

💦Dogs die of heatstroke because they were NOT COOLED QUICKLY ENOUGH, NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE COOLED!

♨️RISK FACTORS FOR HEATSTROKE IN HOT WEATHER♨️

♨️Large dogs
♨️DOUBLE-COATED breeds
♨️Brachycephalic breeds
♨️June, July, August (UK)
♨️Exercise, being outdoors, left in cars

EDIT: - If a dog is PANTING, it's struggling to control its body TEMPERATURE! 💦HOSE IT TO COOL IT DOWN!💦

❤️PLEASE SHARE - Spread accurate information; potentially save a dogs life!❤️

Less sun, but just as much fun for the Billy Walks crew!
The little crew had fun at Sale Ees and along the river. Neko and Lyra charged ahead and had already been in for a quick dip before the rest of us made it there. They couldn't understand how I knew; they'd been ever so quiet and were back on the path when I saw them (the fact that you were wet, girls, kinda gave it away! 😄).
The afternoon crew also had a paddle or, in Rufus' case, a belly-flop or 10! Cheeky Boomer Boston managed to get the ball that Rufus had found, but then dropped it and forgot all about it - typical! Don't ever let Boomer have anything that you don't want to lose - because he will! 😄 He also really really wanted to do zoomies and in the end Marnie obliged: "You want zoomies? I'll give you zoomies - let's go!!" Never a dull moment with the best crew in the world!

After the rather epic adventure the day before, walks were a kind of quiet affair for those who'd taken part. There was still plenty of running and excitement though. Lulu was thrilled to be out with the little crew; she's doing ever so well! She even took a dip in the river and went deeper than she's ever been known to do before - well done, Lulu! 😃
The afternoon crew was joined by Boomer, who was very ambitious with a large stick - steady on now, Boomer! 😄

Some important info that I hope no one will ever need!

Important information - just in case you get notified by one of the microchip databases that someone is requesting to update your missing pet’s microchip registration!

It does happen and sadly the microchip databases fail to pass on any helpful information and as you can imagine it’s very scary being told your dog or cat will have their microchip registration changed unless you can prove your missing pet is living with you, which would be impossible to do when your pet is missing. You couldn’t make it up! Keep safe and be aware.

When the little crew and the afternoon crew joined forces and walk time .... we had a party! 🥳
So, yesterday was a quiet day and with the weather forecast being dire later on (spoil alert: the weather was fine!), the little crew and the afternoon crew came out together for one big walk. And we all had a great time! There were zoomies and rough n tumble in the woods, some splashes in a very smelly brook - followed by a swim in the river to clean up! 😄 - and "lunch" was served between the dandelions 😄 Then there was more sniffing and exploring before we hit the beach, where some of the crew got really giddy 😂 After that, things went a bit quiet for the last stretch; there wasn't an appetite for any more zoomies or games when we got to Turn Moss. Unsurprisingly, the van was very quiet on the way back and I can only guess that most of the crew will have slept the rest of the afternoon, dreaming of all the fun they'd had 😴😴

It was a scorcher! The little crew had a shady mooch while the afternoon crew took to the river. Marnie even had two dips, which is unheard of! The boys both like a good splash and a swim, but afterwards, Marnie managed to get the ball before Stan and taunted him with it all the way back. Cheeky Marnie! 😄

We ended the week on a much more cheerful note, with more sunshine and less rain! The little crew: Jenny, Sherman and Lulu, went on sniffari to Hardy Farm. It's a favourite and they loved it! 😃
The afternoon crew had no time for such things; Marnie, Rufus, Stan, Bonnie and Boomer mostly ran! The love birds, Bonnie and Stan, rough n tumbled their way through the walk. Rufus suddenly got an attack of the zoomies, Marnie joined in and Boomer can always be found wherever the action is! 😄
Marnie did one of her many party tricks: whenever there's something to jump on, such as a bench, she'll jump up and pose - for a treat of course! Everyone else was curious about what was going on, and, for quite a few treats (!) agreed to join in. Say cheese! 😁

Oh my word! While the little crew had a ball - literally! - the afternoon crew ended up in the biggest downpour ever! I think we all got soaked to the skin. But, to end on a better note, as soon as the rain stopped the sun came out and we finished the walk on a very positive note with a few rounds of "catch the soggy treats!" 😄

The little crew: Neko, Lyra, Bruce, Jenny and Sherman explored Sale Ees. Bruce had been on holiday, so had to catch up on the latest gossip. Safe to say he's fully up-to-date again! Neko and Sherman raced each other and Neko won by a "canine mile". That was enough exercise for Sherman, he took it easy for the rest of the walk! 😄
The afternoon crew: Marnie, Rufus and Boomer didn't take it easy (although Rufus might have!): Marnie thought she'd give a master class in doing zoomies and Boomer gave her a run for her bonios! 😄 It's a laugh a minute with the Billy Walks crew!

Oh my word - time really flies when you're having fun!! How did it get to June already?? Jenny and Sherman's walk flew by indeed while they were having fun exploring Longford Park. They love it there; it's a great place to go on a sniffari and have a good run 😁

The afternoon crew: Marnie, Rufus and Stan went "off grid"; if you ever hear dogs and a human in woodlands near you but you can't see them, that'll likely be us 😄 Of course Stan had his "ballie" with him and we had a game or three. Marnie played her favourite game: finding the ball before Stan does and running off with it! She found a big fallen tree and jumped on its roots, to watch Stan looking for it furiously from above! 😄 Marnie loves climbing and jumping on things and during this walk she really got to let out her "inner monkey". The time flew by indeed! 😃

Jenny and Sherman had a lovely time at Sale Ees. Jenny just had to go for another swim! Swimming season is officially open and nothing can stop her, as long as I keep throwing stones in the water - she loves to chase the splash they make! 😄 Given half a chance, they also skip over the stepping stones, just for fun 😃

Marnie, Rufus, Stan, Boomer, Betty and Elsie had a great time too, going through the pylon field and Chorlton Meadows. "Two-tone Stan" also paid a visit (Stan just loves a muddy puddle, and usually comes back looking black and tan, hence the name 😄) and Betty and Boomer also joined in. It was a river bath for everyone afterwards! Never a dull day with the best crew in the world! 😄❤
