Cairn Terrier Association of Ireland To promote Carin terriers in Ireland
Thinking of getting one of these wonderful breed or if you own Also hosted on the site is Cairn rescue.

The Cairn Terrier Association of Ireland was established in 1928. Thinking about getting a Cairn Terrier and want to learn more about this breed. Most people remember TOTO in the Wizard of Oz well Toto was a female cairn terrier. This wonderful breed is a joy to live with for the right people it is an amazingly adaptable little dog who can live in the country or the city as long as it has a secure

garden to play in. They love human company and they do not like being left to live outdoors. If you want to read more about the Cairn please visit the secretary’s website www.cadagio.com here you will find a lot of information on the breed and on acquiring a Cairn puppy. If you would still like to know more contact the club secretary

This is a real good article so before you get a puppy please think about this article if people did their homework less dogs would end up in the rescue system. As an association we also run the breed rescue we do not post the dogs online as we want people who want a cairn not just someone seeing a cute photo and applying we do home checks in advance and talk about the pros and cons of the breed if you are interested in an older cairn please contact us but you will have to complete an adoption form to help us match you with the right dog.

“Adopt don’t shop” sounds noble, but it may be fueling the shelter crisis. Here's why ethical breeding and accountability matter more.

So important when you get a puppy to know this

When you get your 8 week old puppies, please keep these images in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

When you're letting your puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

Today we mourn the death of the President of our association Katherine O Herlihy. Katherine and her mother showed cairns under the Mutaca prefix and had great success. They shared their knowledge with any newcomer that wanted to learn about the breed. When the association decide to help with cairn rescue Katherine was first to volunteer. Rest in peace Katherine you will be sadly missed
