🐾Happy National Rescue Dog Day 🐾

Today, we celebrate the incredible resilience, loyalty, and love of rescue dogs everywhere—especially our beloved Neos. ❤️

At Mastino Rescue, every dog we take in has a story - many have faced neglect, abandonment, or hardship. With patience, structure, and compassion, they become the most devoted companions you could ever ask for.

We are endlessly grateful to our fosters, adopters, volunteers, and supporters who make second chances possible. Thank you!

Consider fostering or adopting one of our amazing Neos by completing a family profile application: https://www.mastino-rescue-inc.org/adopt

Does this handsome boy look familiar? Come on look at that face and think about it. For those of you that guessed Alfredo aka Alfie is the Neapolitan Mastiff in the logo, you would be right. 😍Mom is an artist and graciously drew her boy for MRI capturing him perfectly. 😎

Six years ago today this boy met his forever people. And it’s been death for every vacuum cleaner in the house ever since.😂😂😂 Most of us totally understand that. Alfie’s personality is bigger than life but we are so grateful Mom and Dad were experienced and never gave up.

You are one loved boy. ❤️

🆘🆘🆘🆘2 FOSTER HOMES NEEDED🆘🆘🆘🆘

Situation: Elderly back yard breeder in hospital. Several breeds on property including 2 Neos. The 7 year old female that we are calling Mama Blue is pictured.

There is also her 2 year old daughter who we are calling Baby Blue for now. Currently, no photos on Baby but hope to have within a couple days.

The only other info we have is it appears that the dogs already removed are friendly to each other which leads us to believe they were together every day.

If you can’t donate or foster please share, this is an URGENT TIME SENSITIVE need. Ways to donate along with a family profile foster application can be found on the website at Mastino-rescue-inc.org. Or you’re welcome to email [email protected].

Updates will be shared for the girls as received.

Today we celebrate 🎉 Gemma’s Gotcha Day. On 4/27/24 a desperate email was received from a California shelter that a dog was up for euthanasia in 2 hours if not tagged by a rescue. Thanks to one of our dedicated volunteers/fosters Bobbie Colon she was saved.

The photo on the left was pick up day, the same day the email came in. Gemma weighed 60 pounds. About a week before a couple from Colorado completed a family profile and it was approved. When Gemma was secured with her foster/transporter, Bobbie a call was placed to the Colorado home.

Praying that they would want her, her dreams of a loving home came true. She is literally her Mom’s ride or die right beside her while Mom bikes, works out, hikes in nature or protecting her home as a true Mastini.

The photo on the right shows Gemma today a truly beautiful, confident and happy MRI alumni. On 5/27/24 she became a permanent resident of her then foster home. With Mom being a photographer there are many awesome photos that are captured daily. 🥰 Thank you for giving her the chance to thrive. Happy forever. ❤️

🎂🎂🎂🎂BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION 🎂🎂🎂🎂

A message from Mastino Royalty Traviare aka Travi’s Dad:

Hi to all of Travi’s friends, Today is Travi’s fifth Birthday. Travi has matured into a wonderful companion. Travi is now social with all dogs and humans that he interacts with. Travi loves going to the Vet’s office, we have been to the Vet’s office a lot lately. Now Travi weighs 141 lbs. Travi’s foot with part of the missing toe has been infected on and off since December. We have been treating it with antibiotics on and off. The Dr. decided to amputate the missing toe since there was no nail and pad under it. He has an appointment Saturday to remove the remaining stitches. I am so happy that Travi does not take from the counter anymore. Now he sits there staring at it, til I put it away and reward him. Travi and I want to thank everyone who participated in finding Travi’s forever home. Thank you.

For our many new followers Travi came to us in late April of 2023. After roaming the streets of Dayton, Ohio for weeks he was finally trapped by a fellow rescuer. Once we received Travi he was vetted and the hunt for a home began. He needed a breed experienced person as he was a raw dog. Raw meaning, no social skills, did not like other dogs, no manners, most likely never lived in a home environment and no human direction. The perfect match was found and on July 5, 2023 he became a permanent member of his family residing in New York. 🥰

Dad didn’t care he was more than willing to invest the time, love, understanding and patience. As you read above it certainly has paid off and we couldn’t be happier for our handsome boy. Happy 5th Birthday and to many more. ❤️🎈🎉

🐾 Lyme Disease Awareness for Our Mastino Rescue Family 🐾

Our Mastinos may be big, tough dogs—but they’re still vulnerable to tiny threats like ticks. With tick season here in the Northeast, it’s important for all of us in the rescue community to stay informed and proactive.

🛡️ Prevention Matters
- Keep your Mastino on veterinarian-recommended flea & tick prevention year-round
- Do daily tick checks—especially around ears, neck folds, toes, and under collars
- Maintain your yard by trimming grass and clearing brush
- Ask your vet if the Lyme vaccine is appropriate for your dog

🔍 Know the Signs
Lyme disease can take time to show up, and symptoms can be subtle at first:
- Limping or stiffness (sometimes shifting from leg to leg)
- Fever
- Lethargy or reluctance to move
- Loss of appetite
- Swollen joints

💊 Treatment & Care
- Lyme disease is typically treated with antibiotics from your veterinarian
- Most dogs respond well when treated early
- In more serious cases, it can affect the kidneys, making early detection especially important

❤️ A Note for Our Rescue Community
Many of our rescued Mastinos come with unknown histories, so staying consistent with prevention and monitoring is key. If something feels “off,” trust your instincts and reach out to your vet.

We’re all in this together—protecting these incredible dogs we love so much. 🐶

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month 🐾

If you have a large or deep-chested dog, it’s critical to know about bloat (GDV – Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus). This life-threatening condition can develop suddenly and progress rapidly—minutes matter.

🚨 Signs of bloat include:
• Swollen or distended abdomen
• Unproductive retching (trying to vomit but nothing comes up)
• Restlessness or pacing
• Drooling or signs of pain
• Rapid breathing

This is an emergency—immediate veterinary care is essential.

🩺 While getting to a vet is always the priority, every large-breed dog owner should consider having a bloat kit and knowing how to use it in a true emergency. These kits can help temporarily relieve pressure and may buy precious time during transport.

✅ Be prepared:
• Talk to your vet about your dog’s risk
• Learn how to recognize symptoms early
• Ask for guidance on assembling and using a bloat kit
• Keep emergency numbers easily accessible

Preparation can save lives. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

🎉It's official: Ettore is ADOPTED🎉

His foster family wasn't interested in another dog, since they already have 👑 Mastino Royalty, Serena, 👑 now called Maggie, and another dog.

After MRI rescued & rehabilitated ❤️‍🩹 the bone🦴 infection in his arm, Ettore needed considerable decompression time ⏳️ and training to build his confidence 💪. The family's patience and persistence paid off because Mr. E's playful side 🐾 came out and he bonded deeply with Maggie and the family.

Congrats Ettore! 🥳 Wishing you endless hours of wrestle mania and tug-of-war with Maggie and pack cuddles on the couch.💙
