We said goodbye to Parsnip 😭 We loved that spicy little grandma, everyone did. She was the quietest, sweetest little house mouse, but when she had something to say, she said it, whether it was f* off, or YAAAS dinner time!!! Sometimes she wanted a cuddle, most of the time she wanted her own cozy, fuzzy den, all the time she wanted to sunbathe on the deck and once in a great while she wanted to go on a walk or car ride with the other dogs, asking with a tail wag and those giant soulful eyes.
Parsnip had become a forever foster. As our little mystery patient, she wasn’t suitable for adoption. When we brought her in, she seemed like your average middle-aged Chihuahua lady needing some good care, a little weight loss, some good food and then she’d land on her feet, but Parsnip just had one mystery illness after another. She seemed to have cycles of feeling pretty good and then definitely not so hot. She had come into the shelter Albuquerque Animal Welfare with a puncture wound to her shoulder that seemed to heal nicely. Then a few months later, the front of her shoulder swelled suddenly and burst open with infection. That wound took months to heal. Later, her little toes turned red and puffy, and then the hair fell out in big clumps, and that reaction moved up her arms and across her body overtime, until she had huge patches of missing hair everywhere. Ultimately we suspected an autoimmune disease. Needless to say, she went to the vet a lot, she saw the dermatologist, she had a very healthy diet and lots of supplements. She had the most lovely, kind and knowledgeable acupuncturist Dr. Rapp of Pawfection of Helping Hands and an entire crew VCA Dakota Ridge Animal Hospital that were excited to see her every time she came and tried so hard to help her heal too. Last week she had what appeared to be a large stroke. We rushed her to emergency and she saw a neurologist. She quickly lost use of her back legs and then her front legs, and we knew it was time to let her be free of this body that just didn’t work so well. Rest easy sweetheart 💔
