***URGENT*** We are currently suspending cat intakes and adoptions at the shelter as a precaution for brief period of time due to Feline Panleukopenia.

Panleukopenia is common in animal shelters, especially during kitten season, which is in full swing right now.

This virus infects the gastrointestinal system and can potentially lead to death. We are taking every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of the 418 cats/kittens in our care.

Please remember our important programs such as Don’t Kitnap and Wait til 8. Kittens are the most vulnerable population in a shelter environment and are extremely susceptible to disease. Kittens have the best chance at survival with their moms or in a home environment. Bringing kittens to a shelter significantly increases their risk of illness or death.

Anyone who finds kittens is urged to leave them with their mother. For confirmed cases of abandoned kittens, please call the shelter to discuss the safest way to get vaccinations (if 4 weeks of age or older).

Emergencies will be accommodated in the safest way possible. However, Animal Services is requesting to call them at 352-671-8700, before bringing cats or kittens to the shelter.

Dog operations and adoptions are continuing as normal as they are not impacted.

I was outside my house and noticed every single ant hill (like five ant hills) has all the ants outside of it even the winged ants are outside of the colony. Anyone know what this could mean or why they are acting this way? They are all carrying stuff outside of their ant hills.
