Cats in the City (NYC) My focus is to do TNR in Maspeth and the surrounding areas, and to help others start to tnr. I am not a rescue but foster for and support many local rescues.

After a lifetime of owning cats, I decided to help a local animal shelter by fostering a few cats... I was so inspired bu the work they do I decided to put my efforts into fostering/ rescuing cats.

New York City’s animals and families cannot wait.

Voters For Animal Rights is calling on Mayor Mamdani to take immediate action and commit to a real plan for animal welfare across our city. 🐾

Here are the 8 steps we recommend:

1️⃣ $1.5M in city funding for low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter and veterinary wellness care
2️⃣ Capital funding to build new low-cost veterinary clinics
3️⃣ A new law requiring low-cost veterinary clinics in every borough
4️⃣ $2M to fund pet food pantry pilots in the Bronx and Brooklyn
5️⃣ A funded outreach and education pilot to connect families with lifesaving resources
6️⃣ Strong enforcement of existing laws on backyard breeders, licensing, animal cruelty, and sterilization
7️⃣ Transparent, quarterly public reporting from the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene
8️⃣ Immediate expansion of the Mayor’s Office of Animal Welfare to at least three full-time staff, with the ultimate goal of creating a Department of Animal Welfare

Shelters are overwhelmed. Families are struggling to afford care. Animals are paying the price.

New York City has the resources. What we need now is our City's leadership to act.

Forever one of our favorite paintings: "Caretaker Christmas" by Charles Keenan. ❤🐈 We dedicate it to all the feeders and colony caretakers who are out there in all kinds of weather, regardless of the season. ❤️

This painting has consistently also been a favorite of our followers, as we can all relate to it so well! Last year, we looked for more information about the artist to find that he's local to us, living in Philadelphia, caring for community cats and volunteering at our city's high-intake shelter. On his website, Charles writes: "I have been concerned and involved with helping the stray cats in my driveway since my Dad helped me as a boy. More than 5 years ago I became involved with our city's Community Cat program and TNR, which is the Trapping, Neutering & Returning of feral cats to their location under a Caretaker. I have volunteered one day/week at our city's Animal Shelter for years to help the program control the cat population in our city. There are many cities in the USA (and around the globe) that also support TNR and I hope that you learn more about it if you are not already familiar." Clearly, Charles is one of us! 😻

This painting is now available as a print, as a poster and as notecards. Visit Mr. Kennan's website at https://loom.ly/3jvEkWM to find this and his other works.

No matter how frustrated you may get when your cat eliminates outside of the litter box, never resort to punishment. It will damage the bond you share and your cat may become afraid of you. Elimination outside of the box is never a deliberate misbehavior by the cat. There's always a valid reason and very often it's a cat's attempt at solving the problem. Instead of getting angry, look at the situation of your cat's point of view so you can accurately identify the cause. The place to start is with a veterinary check-up because there could be an underlying medical cause. After that, take a serious look at the litter box set-up, your scooping and cleaning schedule, and whether something (or someone) is causing your cat to not feel safe in the box.
