On November 3rd of 2011, I was driving from Highland Meadows to Los Lunas on a desolate stretch of Hwy 6 in New Mexico. As I drove past a portion of the Isleta Reservation, I saw an extremely emaciated horse standing along the fenceline. When I pulled over, I was dumbfounded at the condition of the bay gelding (there is an album in photos). The words that fell from my mouth were "no way. there's j

ust no way" dotted with expletives. I noticed the dried mud on his legs and knew he needed water along with food so I left a small bit of alfalfa that was in the back of my truck and, telling him I would be back, I continued on to Los Lunas which was still a half hour away. When I returned to where I had left him, he was no longer there. I left the water for him and drove along the fenceline looking for him. I finally saw him cresting a small hill heading away from the road. No matter how much I called to him, he did not turn around. Unfortunately, it was the last time I would see him alive. The day after I saw the gelding I called and spoke with an Isleta Ranger about the horse and he told me that someone had dumped him on their property a few weeks prior. They had tried to catch him when they first saw him but he avoided them and, as the reservation encompassed thousands of acres, they had no idea where he had ended up. He was willing to let me on the property but, since it was a Friday, I would have to wait until the following Monday for him to be available. After the phone call, I went back out to try to find the gelding. I would drive along the fenceline with binoculars, call for him, and hope that he would show up. I spent hours waiting for him on Saturday and Sunday. He never drank the water or ate the hay I left him so I could only hope he had found some elsewhere. Come Monday morning, I met the Isleta Ranger at the gate and he let me in with my trailer. My plan was to ride out and find the gelding. As I unloaded my horse, the Isleta Ranger said he would drive the fenceline and see what he could find. Just as I was stepping into the saddle, the Isleta Ranger came back and said riding out was not necessary. He had found the bay gelding laying dead along the trail leading to where I had left him food and water. He gave all he had left trying to reach what could have begun to save him. I spent some time with the gelding and, as I stroked his neck, I apologized for the humans who had let him down. I told him that I was sorry that I could not get to him soon enough and I named him Ranger for his preserverance and for the Isleta Ranger who had tried to help. I told him that he would not die in vain or be forgotten. That I would use his name to help others like him and in that moment, with my hand resting on the body of the little bay gelding, on November 10th 2011, Ranger's Legacy Equine Rescue was created.

While we were getting horses put up for dinner, we were hit with quite the rainstorm. It came down hard and we had to take shelter. It did not last very long. Maybe 1/2 an hour but, man, did it make everything sloppy. I felt like I was wearing 10 lb weights on my feet.

The GMC quit a couple of weeks ago and has been parked outside of Teddy's pen ever since. The starter went out and I haven't had the moneh to get it repaired. Now the battery is giving me problems with the 4 wheel drive and I know I am going to have to replace it (or the alternator?). It is too dead for the portable battery charger so I am going to try to jump start it with the Dually.

So far this month, we have received $1,379.35 in donations and have spent $1,899.91 in our endeavor to care for the horses in a way that is conducive to good health and mental and emotional well being. It is only the 16th and we are floundering. We spend more money each month than what comes in. There are only a few of you who donate when asked and there are 6 of you who donate each month without my asking. Each month the donations are dwindling and we have spent more than what is coming in just to care for the horses. We do NOT have any more money set aside. What we have, is what we have and, as of this moment, we are in the RED. We are struggling.

We have only taken in two horses in the last year. Phoenix in February of '24 and Jay this last March. We do not have any critical horses here right now. Every one is in good shape and the thin ones are getting their weight on. So I do not have any horses that I can put out there to beg for donations to save them. BUT I have horses that still need us. They still need to be fed, watered, vetted, see the farrier, etc. All of that costs money. Money that we do not have.

PLEASE consider a tax deductible donation to help us care for the horses here at RLER. We NEED to get our bank account back up, keep our vehicles running, AND continue to care for the horses.

Making a donation and/or sharing this post will be SO helpful! Thank you!!

All the horses are out enjoying the property again. Ricochet and Phoenix are all the way down on the far end (about 7 acres away) in the deep grass, so no pictures of them today because I wasn't walking down there in this heat to get em.

Sid and Tigger are always buddied up and the rest of them finally found the really deep grass in the back. If they were pigs, I'd say they were in hog heaven. Lol

Jay was just out of camera frame making his way to the tall stuff where Red, Mae, and Teddy are.

What is with the large bugs I am finding all of a sudden? This is a Plains Lubber Grasshopper. These guys have very few predators to worry about and the birds that DO eat them will spike them on something very sharp to dissipate the toxins in their bodies before doing so.

It is also important to note that this Grasshopper is NOT harmful to humans unless ingested.. this has been a public service announcement.

My sister and I have started a new project. See the patch of "grass" between my driveway and the road? We are going to put up a fence with a gate. I have had all the fencing for months. As a matter of fact, the cattle panels are somewhat buried in the weeds in this photo. 🤦

Becky took up most of the t-posts that were there for years marking where trees used to be and tomorrow, if the weather is decent, we will start the posts for the gate. Stay tuned!

Well. This had me a bit worried this morning when I found it in one of the water tanks. I mean, look at the size of her! And that stinger!

Thankfully NOT a killer bee/hornet of any type but a Western CICADA Killer Wasp. My sister looked it up. This is a female as males do not have stingers. Also, thankfully, they are not aggressive towards humans or animals. Just cicadas. Whew!

I just think that Jay is the cutest little old man. He loves attention and would really rather hang with people than with other horses. I cannot wait to see how he looks when he finally reaches his healthy weight!

All of the horses got the run of the property today. Jay was a loner for about an hour and then he finally got in with the rest of the herd. Although there were a couple of scuffles about who was boss, everyone got settled into their places pretty quickly. Getting them put up for dinner was a lot easier than I thought it would be as well. My sister helped and it took us less than a half hour to put them up and feed them.

EDIT TO ADD: 12:45 P.M: Phoenix has a sponsor for his "SUPER WEIGHT GAIN." Would anyone else like to sponsor Tigger or J?

Ricochet at breakfast this morning. I tried to take a portrait with my new phone but I guess I was too far away so his face got a little blurred along with his tail. He is looking so good though!

This is what your support does. It allows me to take care of each of these horses in a manner that is conducive to good health and happiness for each one. Even though their feeding regimes are different and they may require different supplements, or different vet care, your support is what gets them looking this good and keeps them healthy. If they could speak our language, they would be thanking you themselves.

Will you consider a tax-deductible gift for the horses here at Ranger's Legacy Equine Rescue? Phoenix is in need of his "Horse Guard Super Weight Gain" and I think it would be a great product for Tigger and Jay as well. These are our three most difficult horses to put the weight on right now. Both Tigger and Phoenix went through health issues that caused them to drop weight and Jay had problems with his teeth. We are doing all we can to help them get to a healthy weight once again. One 10 lb bag is $57 and a 40 lb bag is $120. There are other expenses that go along with caring for the horses as well so anything you can help with would be greatly appreciated.

I went to town today and got a bundle of grass, a couple more bales of Alfalfa, three more bags of senior, and two bags of alfalfa pellets.

I got home right and managed to get the hay unloaded with my sister's help right before we had a bit of a cloud burst. It didn't last very long but it made the sky feel clean and it left behind this pretty rainbow.

Would anyone like to sponsor Phoenix with this product? He has been on it almost a month and it is doing wonders for him. Better than the Gutx he was on. I found a 10 lb bag on Amazon for $56.69 and free shipping (if you are a prime member I think) and Phoenix would use a little over 10 lbs per month. You can get it in 40 lbs as well but it is a bit expensive.
