Your Vet Cares ❤️ Helping pet owners to better understand the special value their vets bring.

Surveys show that veterinarians are one of the most trusted professions around the world. But there are still some misconceptions among the public about veterinary care, particularly when it comes to cost. This page is about helping pet-owners better understand their veterinarian, and the special value they bring. They’re here to help our animals and pets (“the heartbeats at our feet”) to live a happier, healthier life.

Easter lands differently for everyone 🐣

While some of us are enjoying a break with whānau, others are working through the weekend – whether in the clinic or on-call.

For veterinary teams, time off isn’t always guaranteed. And emergencies don’t pause for holidays.

Please remember to thank those who choose to spend their time caring for our animals.

“Our house is a zoo!”

For some Kiwi households, this has the ring of truth.

"How soon can I start vet school?"

We’re loving this learning resource, aimed at school kids Years 4-8 🎒✏️
Young students complete ‘vet school’ and specialise in dogs, horses, cows or chickens. They use data to eliminate possible diagnoses and make a correct diagnosis to rewrite our patient’s story.

"Why does it cost that?!"

That’s what people often ask when it comes to taking their pet to the dentist.

But the answer is simple.

Veterinarians have all the same costs that a human dentist does – expensive equipment, surgical suites, x-rays, and highly-trained staff. What’s more, animals need general anaesthesia to undergo treatment. (They can’t sit in a chair and ‘open wide’ 😊)

What's a typical day for a veterinary nurse? It's multi-skilled and very busy.

Just some of their responsibilities are to:
🐾 Triage incoming pets
🩺 Assist vets in consult
💉 Prepare patients & equipment for surgery
😷 Monitor surgical anaesthesia
💊 Administer medications & treatment
🦴 Take x-rays
🦷 Perform certain dental procedures
❤️‍🩹 Monitor the patient’s vitals
🛏️ Ensure the patient’s comfort while in hospital
🍖 Give expert advice on nutrition and at-home care
💕 Provide cuddles, comfort, and paw-holding

You'd never say to a teacher, doctor, chef, mechanic, etc. "If you really loved [kids/people/food/cars], you'd do it for free!"

Yet, many pet owners do just that – whether online or even to their vet's face. It's a form of emotional manipulation, and it has to stop.

Some wear scrubs, work through lunch, and stay late to comfort scared pets.
Please thank your veterinary nurses – they are the backbone of veterinary care.

Many veterinary teams go above-and-beyond to care for wildlife in need. They give up their time to this, and cover the costs themselves 🖤

Even dedicated wildlife hospitals rely on grants, donations, and dedicated volunteers to do this work.
If you'd like to help, consider supporting your local wildlife hospital with a donation today 🌿❤️ (Oh, and also say ‘thank you’ to your local vet)

This old myth is wrong for several reasons! ❌

👉 When pets lick their wounds, they spread bacteria in their mouth directly into the sore.
👉 Their tongue can inflame and irritate the tissue around the wound, making it more painful.
👉 And because it hurts, they lick more—causing a vicious cycle.

That’s why pets with a wound wear an e-collar, so they can’t lick or bite the sore before it’s totally healed.
