START Animal Rescue START transports at-risk animals from high-kill shelters in CA to rescue partners in the Pacific NW. Since our founding in 2011, we have saved over 13,000 pets.

Everyday thousands of helpless and defenseless animals both young and old are killed in Southern California shelters due to lack of homes and shelter overcrowding. Shelter Transportation Animal Rescue Team (START) is a 501©(3) non-profit organization formed in May 2011 by a group of active and concerned animal lovers—Steve Spiro, Suzanna Urszuly, and Rene Ruston—to address the horrifying issues of

animal overcrowding by providing two necessary and significant components: Transportation and Spay/Neuter. Shelter Transport Animal Rescue Team (START) , rescues animals from overcrowded high-kill Southern and Central California shelters. We transport monthly up to 125 animals via our customized vehicle to fully vetted organizations in Oregon & Washington, where they are readily adopted into good homes. We also provide spay/neuter and medical help to the underserved communities in Riverside, Colton, Palmdale, Lancaster and other areas in need. In addition to our Transport program and Spay/Neuter program to underserved communities, we have the "Beyond Borders" program that rescues dogs out of Mexico and Dog Meat Farms in South Korea, Grassroots program to assist small rescues with seed money to rescue animals from high kill shelters. START relies on generous donations to keep its transports and Spay/Neuter services running. For more information on how you can get involved and donate visit, http://startrescue.org/donate/ or contact Steve Spiro: [email protected]. A special thanks to the generous donations from donors like you, our reputation keeps on growing, making a real difference in the animal’s lives! 🆘 Foster needed for IRIS in (or near) Portland, OR.

💚IRIS is one of three Daschund mix sisters rescued from a shelter in California. She is very sweet and has an extremely gentle and calm demeanor, she is friendly, likes other dogs, and we do think she would be fine with cats too 🐈
IRIS is vaccinated and has had her rabies shots, flea meds, and Bordetella!
She is truly a gem of a dog and is around 22 lbs.

If you think you can give her a home whether it be a temporary foster home or a permanent adoption home please reach out to [email protected]
Or text me at 804-651-6442

🚛🐾💚We apologize for neglecting our social media! We prefer to always keep you in the loop, but when what was to be rescue-transport in the van with about 10 dogs, turned into a rescue transport in the RV “BEASTIE” with about 75 dogs…. Well, it’s been quite the week!
We are feeling grateful to have helped so many dogs (and a couple of cats) escape the shelters and make it to the Pacific Northwest! Pictured here is just ONE precious passenger! we will share more later today!
For now it’s back to sleep! 💤🛌🐶

🚐💚🐾Alongside our usual rescue trips this month, we rented a small van to get a few extra pups to safety—and it was worth every mile. 🛻🐾

Meet FLUFFY and HONEY!

FLUFFY, the black-and-white pup, came from a homeless encampment where he was tied up 24/7. Now he’s safe, decompressing with a START foster, and already has a wonderful adoption application in!

HONEY, the little white dog, was picked up as a stray by Newman County Animal Control. Her condition was heartbreaking—so neglected that even her fur told a story. She did have an owner, but thankfully, the shelter persuaded them to surrender both her and her mother. 💔 We may have a loving home lined up for mom… and if not, we’re picking her up on the 10th!

Rescue takes teamwork, gas money, and a lot of heart—and we’re so grateful to everyone who makes these moments possible.

This big ole lug is easy peasy! He’s a lower energy, young man (2 years old) who loves to play with toys, get belly rubs, go for short walks, and be lazy around the house too. He’s leash trained, potty trained, crate trained, and he knows how to sit, shake, lay down, and take treats gently.
Jonesy is big, goofy, and pretty much likes everyone he meets. he’s in the Portland, Oregon area and if you’d be interested in meeting him reach out to [email protected].
