Permanent residents at the sanctuary in Sherman, TX offer assistance in the healing of Texoma families. Evanescent Mustang Rescue and Sanctuary is dedicated to providing a safe and therapeutic environment for mustangs and burros who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned. Our program is designed to rescue mustangs and burros that are at risk of being shipped to slaughter, most of them coming st
raight from a facility where they are scheduled to be shipped straight to Mexico. Evanescent Mustang Rescue and Sanctuary will coordinate the quarantine, evaluation, and rehabilitation of the rescued equine in order to help them find a forever home and family. If a mustang or burro has the right temperament to become a therapy horse, they may be accepted into our permanent program for Equine Assisted Psychotherapy to provide a much needed service with clients in the Texoma region. The rescued equine that do not fit our program requirements to become therapy horses, or if our facility is full, will be placed with other equine therapy organizations or into suitable homes that have been screened to ensure that they will not end up back where they were before we found them. When we started seeing mustangs become available through the 'kill lots' we weren't prepared to take any equine yet because we were having to wait for the barn and paddock fencing to be completed at our facility. On the morning of May 27, 2015, we received information that a 4 year old grey BLM Mustang mare was scheduled to ship at noon that day. With only a few hours to try to get her to safety, we shared her picture and the very little information we had about her on our page. Within an hour, a guardian angel stepped forward and sent a message asking if she paid the bail for the mustang, could we take her into our program. Somehow we knew that this little mustang was destined for our program, so Haley's Comet was able to find herself taken out of line for the slaughter truck and into her new life as an equine therapy horse. Rescuing mustangs from kill-lot facilities is very difficult - most circumstances require us to network the mustangs with very limited time, sometimes only a few hours, to find a buyer or donor for the at risk mustangs/burros. We will continue to network for the mustangs and burros to go straight from the kill-lots into a permanent home, but most people are not able to commit to a horse coming from these environments because of the difficult quarantine process needed to protect other horses from catching the contageous diseases known to come from these facilities. Here is how the process works for any equine being rescued through Evanescent Mustang Sanctuary - once payment is made, there are only a few days to get transportation and quarantine arranged. We make every effort for this to be done through volunteers, but occasionally payment must be made for these services if volunteers are unable to transport or quarantine. The majority of equine that come from kill-lot facilities are underweight and sick, with most requiring some vet care (from basic medication to stitches/surgeries in severe cases) and farrier work ($50), along with the basic equine care of hay and feed. In an effort to be proactive, we will continue to set up fundraisers to help us continue to successfully rescue these mustangs and burros that are facing such a tragic end and to give them the best opportunity possible to find their happy ending!
