This article started because I'd gone down a rabbit hole about farming, paternity and how patriarchy began and I was desperate to write about it. But I write about dogs. And then I had a moment where I realised that it's all interconnected. The same system that shaped how women and children were treated and viewed and how we see and treat dogs.
How a system that is 1000s of years old is still present today.

On dogs, women, and the system that shaped them both

When a dog stops on a walk, it’s not for no reason.

They’re usually processing something. Most of the time, we try to move them on.

I explore what happens when you don't 🐾

A kinder approach to walks, for every dog, not just reactive ones

Basically have some consideration and awareness for others and your own dog.

Dogs don’t naturally approach each other head on. They tend to move in curves, creating space as they go.

That curved movement isn’t random, it serves a purpose.

It gives dogs time to read each other’s body language properly. It allows the interaction to unfold gradually, rather than all at once. In simple terms, it gives them space to communicate.

A straight-line approach can feel very different. Without that space, it can come across as intense or even confrontational.

This matters even more for nervous dogs, reactive dogs, and dogs on lead, where their ability to move freely is already limited.

But on walks, we often take that option away without realising it — walking directly towards another dog, shortening the lead, and expecting everything to go smoothly.

The way we create interactions can cause so many problems for our dogs.

A small change in angle and space can make a big difference 🐾

Does your dog get bored during the day… fed up with squeaky toys and teddies?

After a while, that constant squeaking can get a bit much.

Why not try something you can actually do together?

That’s exactly why I recommend Tug-E-Nuff toys 👇

👏 Built to handle proper, rough play
👏 Designed for interactive games (not just throwing and hoping)
👏 Made to actually engage your dog — mentally and physically

There’s a wide range to choose from, so you’ll find something that suits your dog.

But the part I love most…

Tug isn’t just a game, it’s communication and cooperation.

When you play tug properly, your dog is learning:
✔️ how to engage with you
✔️ how to let go and re-engage
✔️ how to channel excitement in a healthy way

And that does more than just “burn energy.”

It:
✔️ strengthens your bond
✔️ builds trust
✔️ supports your dog’s emotional wellbeing
✔️ gives them a safe outlet for frustration and excitement

You become part of the fun — not the thing that ends it.

And that changes how your dog feels, not just how they behave.

If you fancy giving it a try, you can get 10% off here:

You’ll notice the difference…
when your dog’s bright-eyed, waggy-tailed, and right there with you.

When teaching anything new, always set your dog up for success, it helps make learning fun and rewarding, and it makes it easier to progress onto the next stage of what you are teaching them 🐾

If you’re out with your dog and you see another dog struggling, please don’t continue walking towards them, walk in the opposite direction.

Your dog might be okay around other dogs, but the dog struggling isn’t.

And even confident dogs are affected. A dog barking or lunging can create discomfort in the moment, and repeated exposures can change how they feel over time.

And it causes even more stress on the dog who is already overwhelmed and struggling.

I’ve had an amazing 3 days at the Dog Behaviour Conference hosted by Victoria Stilwell with so many amazing speakers including Sindhoor Pangal, Kay Attwood, Andrew Hale and so many more.

My brain feels like it's overloaded with information 🤣. But I'm so incredibly excited to look deeper into what I've learnt and incorporate it into my posts.

The guides that have already been updated in the Training Vault will be updated further to include what I've learnt!

To say that I'm excited to put everything I've learnt into practice and into my writing is an understatement!
