When families take home one of our pups, there’s always so much to share—but honestly, it can feel like drinking from a fire hose. Even with documents, it was just too much at once.So I’m trying something new: short, simple video clips you can watch (and rewatch) anytime. Let’s Talk Lagotto Colors 🎨🐶

To all my fellow Lagotto lovers—can we have a quick chat about coat color?

Here’s the thing: in this breed, the only shade I can confidently guarantee won’t change over time is… solid white. (Think of it as the “classic vanilla” of the Lagotto world. 🍦)

Browns, tans, roans, white/browns and Brown and Tans they’re a bit like hair dye on humans. Some stay rich and dark, some lighten up like they spent too much time in the sun, and some… well, surprise you completely. ✨

I keep hearing that breeders are telling people, “Don’t worry, our dogs don’t have the fading gene.” To my knowledge as far as science knows, the exact genetic marker that causes fading in Lagotti hasn’t been identified yet. 🧬 In other words, there is no DNA test that will reliably predict how your pup’s color will age.

So when people ask me, “Will my puppy’s chocolate stay chocolate or turn café au lait?” my honest answer is: we can’t know for sure. If someone claims they can predict it—ask them for the peer-reviewed test result, because I’d love to read it too. 😉

Now, don’t get me wrong: it’s totally okay to have preferences! If color is high on your wish list, just know that unless you pick a solid white, you’ll only truly see how their coat settles once your Lagotto is a few years old.

Bottom line? Choose your puppy for the whole package: temperament, health, structure and then sprinkle in color as a fun bonus. Because at the end of the day—faded or not—they’re all 100% Lagotto love. ❤️🐾
