𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐇𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐚 & 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐞
Calving in cold temperatures comes with extra challenges. Here’s some good reminders as our temperatures dip again:

✅ Dry & Warm ASAP – Towel dry immediately, use heat lamps or warm boxes if needed.
✅ Colostrum is Key – Ensure calves receive high-quality colostrum within the first few hours to boost immunity.
✅ Windbreaks & Bedding – Provide dry straw bedding and windbreaks to reduce exposure.
✅ Monitor Ears & Feet – Frostbite often starts on ears, tails, and hooves. Watch for discoloration or cold, stiff tissues.
✅ Check for Hypothermia – A calf with a body temp below 100°F needs warming ASAP. Use warming boxes, heated blankets, or warm water baths (dry thoroughly after).
✅ Watch for Weak Calves – Cold stress can weaken a calf, making it harder to nurse. If needed, tube-feed to ensure proper nutrition.

Starting November 5th, new rules will change how cattle are officially identified. The current metal tags (orange or silver) will no longer be used for official identification. However, cattle with these tags can still use them.
Moving forward, RFID-EID tags (Electronic Identification Devices) will be required for new cattle. These tags have a 15-digit number and help with disease tracking but are not GPS devices. These EID tags can also assist producers with record-keeping when linked to digital tools, tracking information like weight and treatments.
