Meet Kirkham and Rocky! 🐾

Both of these handsome boys have been with Max’s Hope in a foster home for quite some time- 5 years for Kirkham and 3 years for Rocky to be exact. They love to snuggle on the couch, are gentle with children, and have never met a stranger! They are up to date on all of their vet care to include neuter, vaccines, and wellness exams. Aside from kirkham requiring a dental previously and being treated for an ear infection, they have had no significant illnesses to date. They enjoy climbing to the tippy top of their cat tree to look out the window and enjoy the scenery. They are litter box trained, and enjoy scratching on their scratching posts- never on furniture. When they hear you shake the treat bag, they run to you for snackies and enjoy that time every day. Don’t they sound perfect? We think so! But why have they been with us for so many years? Well, Rocky and Kirkham are FeLV+ and FIV+. People see this on their listings and are afraid of adopting a cat who may be sick. While we understand the hesitation, we hope our post this morning has caught the attention of someone who is meant to be their forever home, but was afraid of their positive status. These boys just need someone to love them a little extra and make sure they get all the preventative care they need to stay healthy and live long and fulfilling lives. ❤️ July 15th is Feline Leukemia Awareness Day, so we wanted to share some information! We have two FeLV+ cats in our rescue and we will be sharing their stories later today.

🟢 What is Feline Leukemia?
FeLV is a contagious retrovirus that affects a cat’s immune system and can lead to serious health complications. While they are more susceptible to illness, many FeLV+ cats live happy lives with the right care.

🟢 How does FeLV spread?
FeLV can be spread through close contact with infected cats through their saliva, f***s, and urine, or from a mother cat to her kittens through milk. It does not affect humans.

🟢What do FeLV+ cats need?
- A stress free, indoor only home
- Regular vet visits and good nutrition
- Ideally, a home where they are the only cat or live with other FeLV+ cats

🟢Why should you consider adopting a FeLV positive cat?
FeLV+ cats are often overlooked in shelters and rescues, but they are just as playful and full of life as any other cat. Many cats with a regressive form of the infection can live for many years with the proper care!

🐾 Adopting a FeLV+ kitty is opening your heart and giving a chance to a cat that may have been overlooked. FeLV+ cats don’t know they are any different, and they have a ton of love to give!
