Succeeding in meeting the hopes and dreams of potential adopters by matching them with chow chows in need of new forever homes. We ended 2023 saving 152!

Houston Chow Chow Connection is a collaborative of dog lovers and rescuers that dedicate their time, efforts and talents toward helping rescue Chow Chows in need. We are an entirely volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) organization with no administrative costs. Our rescue traces its origin back several years to the work of Dianne Watson. Dianne dedicated much of her young life to saving homeless Chows in N

orth and West Texas. In her memory, Houston Chow Chow Connection continues her passion of uniting Chow Chows with perfect forever families. HCCC began rescuing in 2013 and re-homed almost 1300 dogs since inception. Our dogs found homes on the East and West coasts of the U.S. and have traveled north and south even into Canada! As we continue to rescue and re-home more and more Chows, our costs grow. As you may know, rescuing animals takes money. Not only is there the typical care and upkeep (including food and general veterinary care), some of our rescues need specialized treatments. At HCCC we don’t pick and choose the dogs we rescue – they pick us. While the majority of our rescues are healthy, we never turn our backs on the homeless, Chows with physical issues, or disabilities. Some of our incoming babies have suffered long-term and extensive neglect. New HCCC dogs may require spay/neuter, shaving due to extensive matting, entropion and/or hip replacement surgeries, treatment of skin problems and a variety of other issues. We acquire much of our financing through donations and fund-raisers. Please help us provide our Chow babies with the quality of life they so richly deserve.

📢 Wafer is Ready — Let’s Find Him a Home! 🐾🧡

He’s got the floof, the charm, and now… a maybe cat-friendly seal of approval?! Wafer has waited so patiently for his person — it’s time to help him find them.

🐾 Surprise Cat Encounter!
On a recent walk with our amazing volunteer, Wafer met Peaches — the neighborhood’s friendliest cat. Everyone held their breath… but Wafer calmly laid down and let Peaches rub all over him. They even shared nose boops. No barking, no tension — just gentle curiosity. 🥹🐱

🧽 Grooming Glow-Up:
Wafer has handled his grooming like a champ. He’s been calm, cooperative, and is truly starting to shine — inside and out.

🚫 Dog Preferences:
Wafer has made one thing clear:
No male dogs in the home.
He’s done fine when separated from female dogs in the yard, but male dogs bring out the grumbles. He’d do best as your one-and-only or possibly with the right female companion.

• Possibly cat-friendly (!!)

Unik came to us with no name, no history—just a quiet spirit and a body covered in burrs. But what we’ve uncovered is a gentle, sensitive soul who’s learning that life can be safe and kind.

🌥️ Chow Mein Needs Us Right Now 🐾

Our sweet boy Chow Mein — usually a happy, curious little cloud — hasn’t been himself lately. Over the last few weeks, he’s stopped eating, grown lethargic, and has even lost a significant amount of weight. Despite multiple urgent vet visits, bloodwork, and imaging, we’re still searching for answers — and hope.

💔 His X-rays show some concerning signs, and we’re now moving forward with more advanced testing like ultrasounds to uncover what’s going on inside this gentle soul. He’s only about 7 years old and still has so much love to give — but right now, he needs our love, support, and strength to pull through.

Chow Mein has always been one of our friendliest, most affectionate fosters — he loves anyone who gives him attention, and he’s been such a bright spot in our rescue. Seeing him like this is heartbreaking, but we’re not giving up on him.

🚨 Now Safe: Kitsune (Formally Known as Damon the Nomad) 🚨

For weeks, he was the one they couldn’t catch — a quiet figure on the outskirts, surviving with a heavy chain wrapped around his body and no reason to trust. They called him “the nomad,” and he lived up to the name… until the day everything changed.

Thanks to patient efforts, he was finally brought in. He received urgent medical care, including surgery to repair an injury caused by the chain. He was shaved down for comfort, neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.

Now, this young boy — about a year old and 50 lbs — is safe and healing, with a new name to mark his fresh start: Kitsune, which means fox in Japanese. We call him Kit for short — and one look at that little fox face makes it clear why.

He’s settling into foster care and slowly discovering what it means to be loved. He’s already showing a sweet, playful side and has done beautifully with the foster's dogs and cats. His journey isn’t over — but the hardest part is behind him.

The nomad has found his path.

Foxy 🖤 Graceful, Gentle, and Finally Ready

Foxy is a soft, soulful girl — now freshly spayed, heartworm negative ❤️, and microchipped for the new life ahead. She’s estimated to be between 3–4 years old and weighs about 50 lbs. With her calm presence and quiet strength, Foxy is the kind of dog who bonds deeply once she trusts you.

She’s a little shy at first, especially in new places or around strangers, but with patience and kindness, she opens up. Once she feels safe, she’ll lean in close for affection and stay right by your side.

Foxy would do best with:
• A calm, stable home
• Kids 10+ who respect her gentle nature
• Possibly a mellow dog companion
• Cat approved
• A person or family who will give her time to settle in and shine

She’s super affectionate with her people, learns quickly, and has the most adorable little bark—Carol swears she’s going to get you the video soon.

And those squeaky toys? She’s still absolutely obsessed. 🧸 Her perfect day? A brisk walk, toy squeak marathon, and snuggles on the sofa like a retired Olympian.

🌟CANDACE UPDATE — From Broken to Beginning Again🌟

An Update on Candace?!The defeated, silent soul pulled from the shelter in San Diego, TX who barely had the will to stand...Thanks to the quick response and generosity of this amazing community — and the gentle hands of foster Samantha — she’s not only safe, she’s transforming before our eyes. 🥹💗

Candace is about 3 years old we have since learned she is HIGH heartworm positive. Her first vet visit is behind her and her healing journey has begun. She has a long road ahead — heartworm treatment, continued vet care, and eventually spay and microchip — but she's gaining strength every day.

So far we have raised lots of donations! — We've covered her $600 initial vet bill and provided a cushion toward what’s next. We fulfilled our $1200 goal and would love to continue the donations to keep her care fully funded! 💟

Candace is slowly reclaiming her spark. She’s still rebuilding muscle tone from being severely underweight, but she’s now prancing at mealtimes, enjoying cool shaded walks, and nestling into the people she’s come to trust. Her foster writes, “She tucked into me the other day and I just melted — for a dog to choose trust again, so soon, it’s incredible.” 💕

Candace gave us new insight this week — she needs to be the only dog in the home. While she was tolerant through a fence, a surprise close encounter triggered a strong response. She is likely resource-guarding her person after a lifetime of doing without. For her safety and for others, Candace’s future home will need to be calm, dog-free, and full of love.
