Premature Foal Born In A Kill Pen Is Orphaned Days After Birth, His Mother Barbarically Slaughtered...

For this Happy Family Farm, we'd like you to meet Palmer. This foal was born on Palm Sunday in a kill pen. This crowded, dirty, and extremely stressful environment is no place for an expecting mare, so it was no surprise that Palmer came too early. His mother, a reservation Mustang, was slaughtered only days after Palmer was born. This baby would have been next had we not stepped in to save him.
Palmer is the sole survivor of his herd. They had all been shipped off to slaughter and he was the only one still alive. This little boy was completely alone in the world and growing sicker by the minute. Without his mother's milk and surrounded by germs and filth, he was incredibly vulnerable. It wouldn't take long for him to become critically malnourished and by the time we got to him, we could hear the breath rattling in his lungs.
We knew taking Palmer in would be a massive expense, but we didn’t care. Our first stop was the vet. However, because this boy was born premature in a germ-infested kill pen, he was facing a slew of health issues. He already has pneumonia and will need a regimen of medications and to be hand-fed for the foreseeable future. Right now, Palmer should still be nursing, so he also needs milk replacer, which doesn't come cheap.
Palmer has started nibbling on hay, and we're beginning to offer him some mare and foal grain, along with milk pellets between his milk feedings. He will soon go back to the vet for an ultrasound of his lungs, and we hope we to see that the Pneumonia is clearing up.
Palmer is far from out of the woods, but his vet bills are already astronomical. We can't do this without your help.
