For weeks, Steel of the Athens County Dog Shelter led the pack, steady and sure. Then, with just 30 seconds to go, Maverick made his move, gliding into first place. The crowd held its breath.

But Steel’s supporters weren’t done. Somewhere, someone was ready to fight for him. And in the final 12 seconds, twelve heart-pounding seconds, votes poured in. Steel surged ahead and crossed the line as your Underdog Champion.

To every person who entered, voted, and shared their love: you didn’t just take part in a contest. You wrote a story. A story where every animal mattered, where love for our companions turned into hope for those still waiting.

✨️Adoptable Spotlight✨️

Sherry - 14-16wks Female

Meet Sherry. This sweet lanky tortishell found her way to the humane society via hitchhiking!

She made her way into Athens up in the engine of a car, unbeknownst to the driver!

While wary of humans at first, she quickly adjusted to the domestic life and now enjoys spending her days playing (so much playing) with her foster sister/ friend Peggy Hill, cuddling with her foster mom, and soaking up sun beams. Sherry needs a home with another cat/ kitten who’d be willing and excited to play with her. She’s never interacted with a dog, but given her curiosity, her foster mom doubts it’d be much of an issue. If you’re looking to bring some fun into your home consider adopting Sherry!
