Happy 🎉 🥩 🌄 #8 Birthday Beretta!! Seven was a tough year for her, she lost 2 friends (a dog and cat from our family) and seemed quite sad despite playing and adventures. Had to limit her off leash due to surgery, stiffness, and soft tissue injuries. Here's to careful modification of adventures so her 8th year is comfortable and fulfilling.

4 of 5 in this series, things I teach my puppies that I continue to reinforce through senior.
Wait your turn. Whether it's crate, gate tether, stay. It's healthy for our dogs to learn patience.

5 things I do with all puppies through to their senior years.
#2 I reinforce the pup for tolerating intrusive behaviour from humans and other dogs.
When they are young I often deliver food, followed by release from the situation.
👉1st clip I pay after touching the puppy in a startling way. Simultaneously we are working on paws on the ground so I move the treat towards him to get paws on the ground before releasing the treat.
🔑 2nd clip I pay the puppy for moving into my bubble. He has to tolerate intrusive body language, keys jangling and straps hanging too.
🧀 3rd clip I relieve the puppy of the looming, crouching and snatching behaviour from the little boy. The puppy leaves the leash that he was chasing and biting and gets a big cheese party.

⌚ In time many dogs can learn to enjoy our overbearing body language.
🌟 Keep in mind some dogs will never appreciate it and you may have to reward creatively and frequently, breaking your movements into more thoughtful pieces.

5 things I do with all puppies through to their senior years.
#1 Pay the name!

When they are a puppy it might be as simple as saying the name then giving a treat or running the other direction.
Throughout their lives I pay variations of their name (whisper, holler, accent and nicknames) with variations of reward. Rewards could be a cherished toy or release cue to freedom or to say hello to a good friend.

18 years with Alani ❤️
It's been 2 weeks without her. She always held me together after heartbreaking losses. She licked my tears after the worst outcomes of behaviour cases. She showed off to clients and could confidently read fear reactive dogs and prompt them to mimic her calm confidence. First to the door when guests came to visit. Wonderful walks with us to the mailbox. Kootenay road trip companion. She was such a special soul and now there is no one to promptly lick my tears when they fall. I miss her so much.

All animals are individuals, no matter the method chosen, each individual personality has to be considered so that the animal enjoys learning and maintains a strong relationship with their family. All challenges in pet behavior are considered when a customer requests service.
